Anybody else find they are 'spikier' than the typical Leos we keep?

Any aspiring taxonomists know if it's part of what distinguishes them as an E. m. macularius subspecies?

Here is a pic of mine and if you look closely you can see how spiky they are...

I've looked at many other pictures of them and it seems to be a recurring trait...

After pondering it for a bit I think it could be a mechanism that evolved do to the warmer/dryer climate of Afghanistan... There are herps that have similar protuberances which are used to collect 'dew' when no other water source is available... The fact that they appear to be more abundant in 'reachable' places (lower back/tail base) makes me think this theory may hold some weight...

I've never had those but I see what you mean, they do have a "spikier" look to 'em don't they? Very cool though! He's awsome! :)
