After Panacur noticed tiny "strings" in her waste.... What are those?

It has been one week since my leo was given her panacur. I have noticed that in her waste there were some things that looked like very tiny pieces of string. Are those dead worms that have been flushed out?

Also, one more quick question! The dosing instructions said that panacur should be given once every two weeks... But I hear a lot of people on hear saying once a week for three weeks... Which is right?

Thank you so much for your help!

If it came out soupy and nasty looking, kind of like wet spaghetti most likely thats her passing some of the worms, there will be more to come. I would keep cleaning her cage/tub every time you see a bowel movement like this to reduce the chances of it happening again.

Yeah it did look... Different. Like, with her urate there was some stuff but it wasn't like normal feces...

Also, there was no blood this time! :)

It has been one week since her initial dosage- should I give her another today or wait until the two week mark?

Also, I've been feeding her baby food to help her get her strength back.

Again thats why you usually need to talk to a vet about parasites.... not really sure about the baby food, you might want to make some Gecko Slurry... theres a sticky with the recipe on the forums. Over-dosing your gecko could cause liver damage

There is a sticky for the slurry in the health section, and generally the recommended usege for panacure is a 3 day course followed 15 days later with another 3 day course IF it was suspected to be a large parasite load. With dogs you can dose every 15 days with a lot less fear of running the system down than leos so you should really talk to your vet about follow up dosing. Did you do an initial course of 3 days or just 1?

Initial course of 1 day.

Maybe I will do the 3 day, however.

Did you do the one day dose under the supervision of a vet? 1 day is generally not good enough. How long ago did you do that one day dose?

Again is a vet supervising this treatment or are you doing it on your own? A repeat fecal should be done to determine parasite load, then suggest a follow up dosing schedule if there is still a parasite presence.

No, I am doing this on my own.

I think you're at the point where you need a vet's intervention esp. since you're seeing strange things expelled in his stool now.

A vet should be consulted for any medications prior to using. We are not vets nor can we prescribe a proper dosage/frequency. A lot depends on the condition of your animal. General treatment may or may not be effective without knowing exactly what is being treated. Tho panacur is widely used for parasites, it doesn't work for all types. Your best bet is to get a fecal sample to the vet.

Alright, I will take your advice and followup with a vet when I get paid next week.

Here is my question, will most vets let you drop off a stool sample for a fecal before the appointment? This one vet in our area demands he sees her first ($55) then do the fecal ($30) and then do the followup examine ($55).

It's a little... Financially draining.

But I do take very good care of my pets- don't get me wrong. I'm just a strong believer in using vets conservatively. I've had sick pets before and have nursed most of them back to health on my own, those that needed vets were taken to one.

Actually, I've had two times where the vet told me to put my ferret to sleep... I took it home, cared for it, and gave it a chance... And they fully recovered.

Some vets can be a little lacking in knowledge when it comes to specialized animal care such as herps or small animals like ferrets and some will do a fecal with out an exam needed. That is going to depend on the relationship you have with your vet. Caring and self medicating mammals is a lot less risky than it is with herps. Hopefully if you explain to your vet the situation he'll be willing to do the fecal with out the visit needed but if it is it isn't outrageously expensive.

I guess that is why I treated her at home this time.

The last time she had eye issues. I went through the runaround with this vet who claimed to know what he was doing. Eventually after $100 he referred me to an "eye specialist".

I took her home, did some research, bought some eye drops, fed her some baby food (since she wasn't eating).

She made a full recovery.

I guess what I will do is call some vets in the area!

An eye is a little different tho hon... your herp isn't ingesting what could be toxic doses of meds that the liver can't handle. As much as I too believe to try and be conservative with vets, I think when it comes to internal meds and leos you really need the consult this time.

Alright. Well I am seeing my ferret vet this Saturday, who I think also does exotics (he is different than the local vet I see). I am going to find out if he does fecals and just ask if I can bring one in.

Do they have to be fresh? She always seems to go to the bathroom when I am at work...

Usually as long as it's with in 24 hours of leaving the poo and you don't refrigerate it it should be good. Lemme double check on that... ok asked my go to guy and he says about 24 hours but the fresher the better.
