I heard around the block that it would be better to start with a hognose whose a little bit older and to not get one of the cute little ones because of them being picky eaters or something? is that why i keep seeing people calling their pinkies "toad scented"?

younger hogs can be problematic to say the least. I'm actually starting the cool down process to cycle some mexican hogs (H. kennerlyi) I hatched out earlier this season since they've refused straight and scented food so far. I did this in 2001 with some picky feeders, cycling them from late Nov to mid March. I hatched 2 difference clutches, totally 16 babies that season. After the 2001/2002 brumation I cycled them up to proper heat levels and didn't have a single hatchling refuse unscented pickies from them on.

If you still want to go with the cute smaller hogs find a breeder that is offering babies that have eaten at least 10 times or more on pinkies. These are established feeders and will typically be less problematic to no problem feeders farther down the road. Similarly, this is something very commonly done within the more reputable side of green tree python keepers and breeders; babies are typically only offered for sale after having eaten 10 or more times. Those that have not are typically sold to those that actually have experience in dealing with young or picky feeders. That in mind and back to the hogs, in my 10 years of keeping hoggies it seems once they are set on feeding they pretty much only refuse when in shed or getting ready to lay eggs.

If you get your baby hog from a reputable breeder, you will not get a problematic feeder... All neonates I have gotten from Brad Chambers and Brent Bumgardner have been spectacular feeders from day one...

My own offspring that I have produced are great feeders as well... Had no problems getting them started and they have not missed a single meal...

I hatched out earlier this season since they've refused straight and scented food so far.

What have you tried for scenting???
