Amount of mealworms to feed.

Our gecko nugget is 7-8 months old. She has a very healthy appetite and I was wondering whether there was a certain number of mealworms we should be feeding her. It seems that we put a fair amount in, and she eats every one of them! Is this a sign we should add more? Should there be one or two left over?

Sorry if you feel this is a very basic question but we dont want to be starving her, obviously.

I let mine eat as much as they want. If she is overweight maybe feed every other day. I personally wouldn't worry otherwise.

Thanks everyone, and can you tell me are waxworms to be considered as a treat for the gecko? We were thinking about getting some for her and we just want to know how many, how often.

Hi Emma, and welcome to the forum.

To my knowledge, Waxworms are very fatting for Leopard geckos. So, to answer your question (correctly I hope), YES. Waxworms should be considered a treat. I feed mine 1 or 2 waxworms a week. Sometimes... every other week.

I wouldn't suggest feeding wax worms unless it's needed, they're very high in fat. Why give your kid cake if we can control it is the way I see it. If she's already got a healthy diet there's no need to add fat that's not needed ;)

But variety is the spice of life. Some of the healthiest leos are fed a diet consisting of several different feeder insects including wax worms in rotation as an occasional treat. There are certain times you like to have a lil extra weight on your leo, the diet needs don't stay consistant just because we feed a consistant diet.

I'd be considering switching your leo over so supers possibly. At 7 mos old my leo was eating 3-4 supers 3x a week with a 2-3 mealworm snack on sundays. Now with winter slowdown and the fact heis turning 1 year old in march he's eating 1-2 supers 3x a week with a rare treat of wax worms 1 or 2 sundays out of the month. His appetite is picking back up tho. Dinner monday consisted of 3 superworms and 2 mealies.
