This is my females 2nd egg ever, the first one was infertile. this one is yellow except i think i see a little bullseye on the side of the egg,

is it normally on the top? or does it not mater?

also the egg is denting on the bottom, is that just because its sitting like that or is it too dry?

thanks

I have seen bullseyes on the side of the egg before. They are usually on top, but if the egg gets turned a little bit, it ends up on the side.. as long as it's not on the bottom, it can still be good.

The denting on the bottom is definitely it being too dry, so just put a moist paper towel square on top of the egg to help it get more moisture. Maybe prepare a fresh container for the egg too, so that the substrate isn't too dry. How are your containers prepared?

Good luck!!

haha, "NoHJ", i dont know if i understand anything u said. i didnt see breeding, the egg is in bator. she did lay egg the 24 of july tho now aug 17.
haha "NoThanks"

i have wet paper towel on it now and it is in vermiculite with no holes in the deli cup (i taped them up), i did have a 1:1 ratio with vermiculite as medium, it probably dried out a little bit tho since 1 egg so i will make up another container i guess

Just make sure that you get the new container in the bator and heated up before transferring the egg from one to the other. Best wishes!

The bottom of the egg denting is not always because it is too dry..........Vermiculite is a material to retain moisture. It can be too wet and cause the egg to set in water, softening the egg shell and allowing the weight of the egg to push down on the soft bottom causing denting. Also some fluids may be lost from the same cause.........that is why Albeys method calls for Perlite (a drainage material, per the Hoffman Co., maker of both materials).......The ratio of water to PERLITE allows the water to pass to the bottom of the container, no holes in the lid creats humidity around the egg giving better conditions for hatching.....Your 1 to 1 ratio is even to high for perlite(.8 X 1) so you had it too wet to start...........Some use vermiculite and hatch with it......But IMHO better hatching will come from Perlite or Albey would use Vermiculite, since he already has it in his lay boxes......If you didn't see them breed it is a good possibility they didn't. Even when I see them breed I keep offering her until she tells him no. As long as she is willing to breed I feel she may not be fertilized. The male may have a problem.

I was always wondering if there was a difference between using vermiculite and perlite, so thanks for that info HJ. We were talking about that earlier tonight as a matter of fact :D

I have read that when using vermiculite, it calls for 1:1 ratio with water, that seems to be the info given in a lot of places, anyway. I hope that things turn out okay for your egg David. If you haven't done the new container yet, perhaps you could just leave the egg alone until you can get some perlite.

When the egg undented, i took the towel up and taped up the last whole, it has been fine so far..

the egg is still mostly yellow but the little red spot/bulls eye if there and there is a dark spot by it..
