Freshwater is not the same as cold water. Water can be either fresh, brackish or salt; temps can be cold or warm. I have a tub with water plants in it that I use as a fish pond. It's outside June-Oct and inside Oct-June. I do put a heater in when it's inside, but it is unheated outside, even in the cold part of early October. I have a school of neon rosy barbs that thrives and breeds and a school of red eyed tetras that thrives and doesn't breed. I have done well with giant danios as well and also with endlers (like guppies) which I now consider to be sort of like the cockroach of fishes. By contrast, I have not done well with corys and plecos which seem to die during that cold October period even though the person who sold me the plecos told me he doesn't heat his indoor tank.

Betta's need some heat. If you are keeping the room warm enough that is stays at about 72 - 78 then a betta if fine. But if it goes lower then that then you might want some white cloud mountain minnows. They do fine in cooler temps.

Neon tetras are not coldwater fish.

Some species of sunfish are coldwater, but they aren't usually available in the aquarium trade. Other species that do ok in the 60-70 degree range are white cloud mountain minnows. They are awesome fish! Tiny, but pretty and active. :)

It needs to be understood that while bettas can SURVIVE in colder temperatures, most will not THRIVE! They will become less active and be more susceptible to disease. They are tropical fish, despite what petstores may try to convince you.

Hello,

real Tropical fish can´t be conditioned to "cold water".
But there are plenty of SUBTROPICAL fish u can keep in a unheated tank !

The most common Subtropical fish is I think Corydoras paleatus and the "Red Bruno" Cochliodon (the one with the brown eye, not the blue-eyed from brasil).
Both are found in Argentina and Paraguay.

The ere allso many Subtropical cichlids like all kinds of Gymnogeophagus, some Crenicichla (but mostly get to big for 120g) Geophagus brasiliensis, Geophagus iporangensis, Bujurquina vittata and more.

Important is that they or their Parents at the Breeder are from Uruguay, Argentine, Paraguay or South/East Brazil.

Herichthys carptintis and H.cyanogottatus are allso known as "colder-proof" they handle undle until 16 C degrees well.

Beautiful female bettas would be good. Stay away from males if you are keeping multiple fish because of the aggressiveness.

If you are looking for something that looks very similar to neons but can withstand cooler temps, I would go for white cloud mountain minnows. They are pretty and look great in a large school and are readily available at most petstores (sometimes they are sold as small feeder fish). Bettas really need warmer water to thrive.

although not pretty in my, own opinion, tinfoil barbs can handle cooler temps. as far as a 120g being to small for geophagus? i have only seen 3 geopahgus that have reached 10" in my life. if you are into predators tiger muskie are available in pet stores from time to time. they would do great in a tank without a heater. channel cats would be another fish you could go with. give us a better idea of what fish you like as far as how active, colors, size so we can help you narrow down a list
