Are you satisfied with the care sheets?

Examples from a Leopard Gecko Care Sheet (from one large retailer)
"Substrate - Use pelleted, mulch-type, or calcium sand; geckos may eat substrate, if they do, select a substrate they won't eat, like paper or cage carpet, or an edible substrate"
"Lighting - Provide fluorescent light for 10 to 12 hours a day"

Is everyone aware this is quite possibly the only information that some new leopard gecko owners will ever see? How do we get it changed nationwide? It seems to be in everyone's best interest (commercial and personal) to get the right information out there.

I don't know... it's just a thought...

The unfortunate thing is that the correct set up for Leopard Geckos does not actually require a lot of high dollar items from a pet store. So getting large corporations to change the care sheets that require tons of unnecessary items would be very difficult to do. That's why it's great that this forum gets the word out to so many new members every day.

I guess I granted them the benefit of the doubt that they're not trying to manipulate consumers. If so, that's very sad. It seems inhumane to willfully influence the risk of health issues in these animals. This is exactly the type of issue an organization like the Humane Society could help reconcile, if they ever change their position on reptiles as pets.

I have tried, in vain, to provide caresheets to two major pet retailers via their main headquarters. It would seem that they are not the least bit interested in providing the correct care and hubandry for their leopard geckos. The lesson learned is not to purchase living creatures from retail organizations that specialize in pet food and products.

I am glad you tried; it's so frustrating they didn't listen to you.

Fortunately, just a little bit of Internet research will lead people to far better information than the baloney on that care sheet.

I've left proper caresheets at the place of my former employment. Nothing can be done, apparently, on a local level to make changes. That has to be done in the "big offices".

;) Good thing the power of word works well!

I guess one solution is for everybody to speak to their local store managers and convince them to correct their care sheets.
