Arthritis and Thyroid Meds

I took our dog to the vet last week and he was diagnosed with arthritis and hypothyroidism. The vet put him on Soloxine for the thyroid and Rimadyl for the arthritis. I was speaking with a woman on another forum and she said that Rimadyl is dangerous and to put him on something else. I just wanted to get another opinion on this before speaking with the vet. He runs out of his samples on Friday and could switch him at that time if necessary.

Unfortunately, all medications have the possibility of side effects or can be taxing on other organs (liver, kidney). I would recommend doing research to find the incidence of occurrence for each medication to calculate the "probability" and see if it is worth the risk in your mind. Even human medications and vaccines have a small "risk", but some are higher than others.

Rimadyl is a commonly prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammmatory (NSAIDs), others include Metacam (meloxicam), Deramaxx (deracoxib) and Previcox (firocoxib). If the bloodwork (especially a chemistry profile panel) doesn't show any abnormalities in other organs, it "should" be safe to use- however with animals there is never any guarantee!

I've had great luck over the years using a combination of pain med management, NSAIDs, and joint supplement diets (I've had great results with Science diet's prescription J/D) for my older guys. Good luck and I hope that information helps!

I couldn't have said it better myself! Bloodwork is a must before and during treatment. :) :main_thumbsup:

He was also tested for diabetes and the vet said that his kidneys and liver all look normal. I know all drugs have some sort of risk, but this lady acted like it was going to kill him, so I thought I would come over here and get some opinions. I will look into those other meds, but considering that his other tests came back normal, the Rimadyl should be okay to use?
