ASK THE EXPERT

Not sure if there is a thread out there about this but i think it would be a really really really good thing if there was an "Ask The Expert" section in here. People who are very knowlegable, with a wealth of experience that can pass that on to newbies, or even people with experience, who maybe unsure of certain things. There is a wide variety of ages in this site giving out information based on there own personal experience, whether they are expreienced or just reptile lovers. I would prefer and im sure im not alone to see a section so that people will get the proper information about specific needs, housing whatever so that the person knows exactly how to raise and take care of their reptile. There are too many misconceptions in this site, where one person says one thing, then another says something else and so on. Who do you believe? who do you trust? Does what part of the world you live in have anything to do with it? You cant always trust what you read online. I believe this site is a great resource for a myriad of questions one might have, but i would prefer if there were a few experts in the field who certain questions could be directed to. I dunno, what do others think??? thanks!

In theory, it would be a good idea. But, I see problems associated with something like this. Who ARE the experts? There are a lot of 'experts' here on GeckoForums, and many wouldn't want to be in a position to have the attitude that "What I say is gospel". On the flip side, there are a lot of members who would like to think they are experts, but are simply not.

I think GeckoForums.net is a GREAT resource for everyone, at different levels of experience. When it comes to our geckos, there are many ways to do things... and just because they are different doesn't make them incorrect. In general, I feel that the vast majority of the members here give out excellent information, and if it's w-a-y wrong, they will get corrected (diplomatically, I hope) here on the forums.

Most of us take in as much information as possible, and with common sense and our own experience & judgement, will come up with the right conclusion on whether or not it is sound advise.

Thanks for replying Golden Gate, im assuming with the amount of posts you have on here, your the "Moderator" creator? I agree totally with what your saying, and your right there is at least for me a ton of useful information within this site, , im proud to be a member. I just think every once and a while a thread starts and everyone has their opinion on whatever the topic might be, which is right or wrong, you just never really know for sure, incuding myself. I can only share my experiences because i never went to school to become a vet, or reptile expert. Most of the people that ive noticed on here have lots of experience with "their" reptiles, but does that make them an expert? Your right, use your own judgment, and after thorough research form your decison based on that. What works for some, doesnt always work for others for whatever reason. Thanks Golden Gate for your input, i appreciate it.

Nope! Kelli Hammack is the owner of this website, and I am one of the 'moderators' here that works to keep this the BEST website on the net! (Actually, I'm just a 'mean old gecko lady').

Exactly! I know there is a LOT of conflicting information when it comes to the 'right' way to raise our geckos, but we need to remember that most of the info is based on someone's own experiences. I know when I started keeping geckos, there was no internet to find answers. Most of what I learned, I did the hard way. It cost the lives of a couple of my beautiful geckos by making poor judgments and choices... all of which were completely avoidable with all we know today.

There will always be differences of opinion and methods. But, I think you will find that most everyone agrees on the most important stuff... like temperatures, substrates, breeding age/weights, feeding, and supplementation. Everything else is just a spin on individual techniques.

If you hang out here on GeckoForums long enough, you will get a good feel for who the real experts are, and hopefully become an expert yourself in the near future! We ALL have something to learn from each other.

Same here Marcia, and I'm the same age as you.
Though I dont have anything close to your experience, I had to learn everything buy observation, intuition, and pure guess work. No internet, no "care books" (that I knew of anyway) and even the pet store folks didnt know anything. Of course, my goal was always just general husbandry, and not breeding like I'm sure you were into. You must have lost alot of eggs in your learning process!

Nowadays, everybody and their Mother raises leos and has their own website to sell them. :D

Just ask me, I know everything... LOL... Kidding...

Seriously, there is a ton of info to be found here on the site and a simple search can yeild some very good answers... Infact I am sure you can find at the very least, 10 answers ot every one question... Not all the answers will be exactly the same and you will get a few angles thrown at you... In my opinion, this is better than asking one expert because you can use the experience of a few people to come to one conclusion that works well for you...
