That is it, i have had it! Dubia Roaches are becoming more popular but people who keep them are becoming criticized for it by family and friends, i no this because it has happened to me and i have only had mine for a week. This is why I propose to change the name to something more appealing. People automatically assume the worst and think of horrible disease ridden disgusting house infesting bugs that will eat you out of house and home. The name i propose is "Armour Crickets" because of there shell like appearance during there nymph stage. So hear me all Blaptica dubia, or the Guyana Orange Spotted Roach (common name). Should and will be known by me and all that no of my feeder colony as, ARMOUR CRICKETS.

thank you for your time.:main_thumbsup:

LOL... I know. You get a few dubias and people immediately think your a crazed animal hoarder living in squallor and eat babies.

I like Armour Crickets!:main_thumbsup:

I wonder if I can get by raising roaches now, if I tell my mom i've got "Armour Crickets" instead. "They're much better feeders, mom, than regular crickets. Bigger, and they don't smell, hop, or make noise!"

They don't make noise or smell? I've never used them... want to but that was one of the things I was afraid of... that and if my gf found out that I was keeping roaches in my room she'd probably never come near me.

They're really quite clean and they don't climb. We've used them for our Tarantulas and if FL hadn't outlawed them, we'd still be using them.
They kinda look like rollie pollies on steroids. :p

*unrelated tangent* Where are you from? I recently learned that the term "rollie pollie" is sort of a regional thing. I went to a friend's house and aske if they'd seen any in their garden lately (for some reason they're hard to find..?) and she gave me the weirdest look. Apparently they don't call them that there...

weird.

Florida native.
But I did get the same weird look when we went to WA. Apparently, they're "potato bugs" in the Pacific NW.:main_rolleyes:

That was the other one I had heard. (Couldn't think of it to save me)
We had friends come down from Indiana and they refered to them as pillbugs.

Lol yah they are called Potato Bugs here in Oregon. But I also call them Rollie Pollies :)

As far as roaches go, I personally enjoy the looks on people's faces when I say that's what I feed my geckos, and even more so when I point to the huge tub in the closet and tell them "there are over 1000 in there" LMAO...they literally recoil and say "nuhuh".

On topic or roli polies, or pill bugs or what ever, where i am from, we call them "Carpenters" because there often found in rotting logs and in wood piles. as for the roach rename, Armour cricket is no good, it is taken by another species. another name proposed on a diff forum was Faux Crickets. Any other ideas for names? should start a poll and take a vote seeing alot of people like the idea.
