Smell my cat

lol i just went in my room and one was out i dont have a clue how ....

the holes i made are not big enough for them

Cat food is fine to use........as long as its the dry kind. It carries a decent protein content.....I use it but along with Layer Hen Crumbles, powdered calcium, carrots(less chance of mold than potatoes) + Orange peel is great..(never saw an orange tree in England though)
...Don't grind(cat food) it up. It absorbs more moisture that way and also lets the highly smelly contents (garlic, etc.) that manufactures include to make it appealing for the cats. You break the shell and let the odors out, along with moisture. Water on about anything make the fragrance stronger. You need an open top or screened top, or many, many small holes in the container. A larger, deeper container could handle all conditions "except your Mum"..........for her to be comfortable about you keeping bugs in the house..........you better get a larger container with a lid and drill TONS of small holes in the lid and upper side areas to keep a good air flow to the contents.
Mums in the UK are number one, before secondary bugs in her home. .......good luck with both.....take care. Hj

Im fairly confident the source of the bad smell was the carrots. After a day or two carrots smell TERRIBLE.

I agree. I have carrots in my colony too. But I musk out the smell with oatmeal. Surprisingly, oatmeal musks out smells! That's why people on my other forum use oatmeal to breed crickets. So they don't smell so bad.

I have noticed a distinct smell coming from the tray my beetles are in, but have never noticed a smell coming from the worms which are housed in the same way. I have always just figured that the beetles give off an odor. Its never been so bad though that I wanted to throw them out.

LOL @ ground up cat food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that is your killer, sorry dude but that was a bad bad bad idea!!!!!!!

i use to try to give ground up catfood to my roaches, it was the most horrible smell, and i only used a little bit. now i just give them fish food and oatmeal instead. its much better. i cant imagine how horrible it must be if you have given them a bunch of it.

for my mealworms i use oatmeal, it actually smells good.

dude, just start over with oatmeal. the catfood is only going to smell worse with time. just move the beetles to oatmeal, i promise its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. good luck!
