Ok, so today my boyfriend and I went to the mall as their food court has amazing teriyaki chicken. As we walked into the main area of the mall, we were stopped by a security guard who asked us for our IDs!!

Apparently the mall that we frequent has decided that no one under the age of 18 is allowed without someone who's 21 or older. Not on Fridays or Saturdays after 5!

Does anyone else think this is ridiculous? I mean, isn't that what the mall is about, stupid teenagers everywhere on Friday nights?

Personally I just feel massively disrespected, I'm turning 18 in January and I can't believe I was kicked out of the mall for being just a few months 'under age'.

That is so strange. I have only heard of people under 18 not allowed in casino or pubs, never imagine a mall would have such rules...strange!

That is crazy! I could maybe understand it if Friday's and Saturday's at the mall were overcome by large crowds of "underaged" people that were being rowdy all the time or something....but I mean really...why make an age limit?

I agree that it's a little ridiculous.

That is a litttttle ridiculous, to say the least! I always loved spending the evenings of my weekends at the mall when I was in High School....

You can always contact the mall staff... complain, and maybe contact some sort of city official... who knows.

I'm sorry about that, what a bummer!

(EDIT: how about maybe... you go and tell the security guard to do his job and get rid of the loud and obnoxious kids, while allowing others who are 'underage' and behave like respectful citizens to enjoy themselves... thats what I'd do...) LOL.

That is far beyond ridiculous!! We know how it feels, though.. Mike and I went to Dave and Busters (just wanted to eat and play some arcarde games) and here in Arizona, many ID's are printed vertically... They actually told us that IDs printed vertically are no longer valid and cannot be accepted.. the real kicker, you only had to be 18 to get in - I'm 23 and Mike is 27, but we both have vertical IDs, and they wouldn't let us in. My ID never expires (literally has no expiration date) and Mike's is a driver's license which doesn't expire for nearly 50 years!!

We couldn't eat because we had to be over 18 but had IDs that are "no longer are valid"..??? You couldn't eat because you're not 18 yet? What a joke!!!!

PS- turning 18 in January? A fellow Capricorn, my b-day is in January as well ;)

I see the two different sides of it. The security guards are probably tired of dealing with some kids making trouble and the kids want a place where they can hang out.

I'm actually an Aquarius, January 22. :) I just missed being a Capricorn.

But yeah, that's seriously ridiculous, too! I mean, at the ages you guys were at, and the fact that you did have IDs that WERE once valid.. It must have been obvious to them that you weren't a couple of 16/17 year-olds.

Even if I was 18, the mall would have made me wear a red wrist band.. Can you believe that? It's like being tagged like an animal.

And I thought the mall was a privately run public place. Turns out they're just a private place that readily abuses their power.

Isn't there such thing as age discrimination?

Thing is.. That's their job!

Darn, I had a feeling I should have also included Aquarius ;) I was born on the 11th and one of my best friends was also born on the 22, 11 days after me ;)

But yeah, Mike is from PA and for him to hear about something like this is more than an outrage for him, since it's where he came from. I can't believe that things have really come down to such idiocrasy, having to be marked..? It makes sense in places that sell alcohol.. but that's it!! It doesn't make sense where only FOOD is served.

What part of PA are you from, if you don't mind me asking? Mike was born in Carlisle and grew up in Shippensburg and Camphill, lived in Harrisburg, and then moved to Westchester before moving here to AZ.

Wow! Not being let into a place to eat just because you have a vertical ID?! That's just ridiculous!! What's up with these places putting an age limit when one isn't needed, or in the case of the restaurant, not letting you in because your ID faces a different way when you are obviously old enough to get in!

Crazy! I hope places around me don't start doing anything weird like that. I think I'd go nuts :main_rolleyes:.

Southern Chester County. :) The mall is actually in Delaware, though. I'm very close.

The reason is economical. Statistics show that while teenagers spend money in the mall, they don't spend as much as other demographics such as middle aged women. Many middle aged women don't want to go to malls full of teenagers so curfews were started so the malls can make more money. There's one high end mall in Houston that I used to shop at all the time and then one day it became the "hangout" mall. It was a hassle to walk through crowds of people just chatting in the walkways so I stopped shopping there.

i don't think that the rule will be enforced for too long since many stores will see a decline in sales since there won't be as many young people buying the latest trends in clothing...

I don't know, it's just something I've come to expect of a mall on a Friday or Saturday night.. Not a bunch of cranky middle-aged women pushing strollers, eating cinnabons, and barking at their children.

I mean, they're there, but their squawking is drowned out by the hoards of shoppers (namely teenagers).

wow. thats retarded.
i bet the music, entertainment, and specialty clothing stores are going to see a HUGE decline in sales. im talking about stores like hollister, pacific sunwear, and hot topic here.

if theyre relying on middle age women at those chain stores then theyre in for a big surprise. teens may not spend as much money as a whole but by banning them after 5 then they will just stop coming to the mall altogether and then almost all the stores are going to see how much they really do rely on the teens' money.

and 5?? thats ridiculous! dont most malls on saturdays close after 9 or 10?
is it that hard for the security guards to do their job for 4 or 5 more hours?
honestly. when i was that age my friends and i didnt even think about leaving the house until after 7pm.

That was just an example of part of that demographic. Teens do spend money in the mall just not as much as the older crowd. I was trying to explain why curfews are in place in malls during a time where the economy is in trouble. And they're not banned during those times, they just have to be accompanied by a guardian. So if you were going buy things you'd just have to take a parent.

They have been doing this in one of the malls by me for about 3 years now and it has improved the quality of the mall quite considerably. I am glad that more malls are doing it. Don't blame the security guard, it is the decision of the mall management first off and finally why don't you blame the kids that have messed it up for the good kids, it's their fault.
