Bedding + Moisture for Mealies

I have a little container with about.. I'd say somewhere around 75 mealies in there. I'm using a combination of what looks like wheat bran (came with the container) but I've also just added some rolled oats. Now do I add in some carrot shavings for moisture? What is most recommended? (potato shavings, sliced apples, etc.)

Thank ya.

i would stay away from carrot shavings, big chunks make it easier to pull out the old veggies and put in fresh ones. I use baby carrots for the most part, but if i am cooking something with potatoes, or eaing an apple, i always make sure the mealies get a slice.

Powdering the rolled oats in the blender will make it easier to sift out the mealworms. I put in scraps from cooking. They seem to particularly like eggplant peels and green pepper cores. Just avoid things that will get moldy. If you use fruit, check it after a day to make sure it hasn't molded.

I like the blender idea, thanks! I'll try baby carrots and see how that works out.

Breaking down the Grain

Breaking down any grain or meal worm
food source (bedding) does make sifting possible.....
When doing so be aware that moisture/mold/mildew is now
even more important to control against.
Grain mites get started in wet broken grains easiest...
and can be a possible problem later for a gecko.
The best moisture item is orange peels.
Just the peel, on top of your grain with the skin side down,
until it dries good.
It still supplies what meal worms want for a long
time after it looks very dry.......very little chance of
moisture problems when using it.
Worms and beetles will gather under the peel for both
harvesting worms and the beetles laying eggs.
take care. HJ

Great info, thank you.
I noticed a few small black beetles roaming around. Are these okay to feed to the gecko?

Moisture

I like the idea of Orange Peels.

You can use a slice of carrot, or potato or apple or any other or most other vegetables. I used some celery but, they did not seem to like it.

I cut a carrot lenght wise and then cut it again lenght wise so that it is a quarter.

A potato I just cut a 1/2 inch slice.

An apple I just cut a small sliver about 1/8th and set it skin side down.

Beetles ... there is a lot of excosketelon (however you spell it) or there is a large shell ... not very nutrious. Many do not feed them to Geckos.
