Best substrate for adult Leos

For almost a year now, I've kept my female leopard gecko on either Repti-Carpet or paper towels. I find those easy to clean and safe. But a couple months ago I started using tiles for my bearded dragon and have great success. Would you recommend tiles for leos? I've been keeping reptiles for pretty much all my life, but I never thought of the tile idea.

And why I have your attention, is there another way I can control the temperature of my heat pad with using a $20 thermostat?

(Btw, the only reason I want tiles or other substrate is for aesthetic look.)

I use ceramic tile for nearly all my leopard gecko enclosures. It's easy to clean, appears to conduct heat well and looks nice. I get slightly textured beige (cheap) tiles from Home Depot. I'm not sure what you're asking about the thermostat. Do you mean is there a way you can control the temp "without" a thermostat? You could get a rheostat (lamp dimmer) but it will need frequent adjusting and will cost you nearly $20.
