Typically it is not painful if you get a bite from a leo. I liken it to getting pinched with the hook side of velcro. However, if they are fighting or really pissed off, then yes it can hurt and cause damage. I believe HJ (Gecko Gathering) started a thread showing some of the nastier bites. I know there are some people who have had to get stitches. The only times I've ever been bitten is when they mistook my finger for food or new hatchling bites. None of these have ever hurt. They took me be surprise more than anything.

Most of the time a leo bite is of little consequence, but I have been bitten several times where it drew blood... one requiring sutures. In every situation it was my own fault.

Thanks.. It is kinda relief to hear.. Although there are some serious ones.. One of mine tried to bite me when i was trying to handle it.. But he missed.. So was a little shock though.. But still managed to catch him without getting bitten..

Yeah - never be afraid of being bitten by your gecko, it'll only make you jumpy. ;) If you're calm and confident, you're a lot less likely to do something that'll drive him to bite you painfully.
My gecko bit me twice: once because he thought I was food :sweatdrop: , and once because he was falling and my hand was nearby - either he panicked and lashed out, or he was trying to get a firm hold on anything he could. :laugh4:
Neither one hurt or broke the skin.
If you have a big adult male who you think could do some damage, respect that, but don't fret about it.
After all, just about every other common pet - dog, cat, parrot, even a good-sized hamster - will probably do as much damage or more if it bites you. And they bite more often. :tongue3:

I had a giant male leopard gecko who laid into my knuckle good once. I bled pretty bad, but the cut was minor and the bite was entirely my fault. He was grouchy because the girls kept rejecting him, and I reached in there before he had settled down and I became the outlet for all his frustration. XD

I guess, I have to know their temperament too..
Seems like the biting issue is not much of an issue afterall.. Haha..

My daughter was bit in the nose, but she kept giving Eskimo kisses to the gecko. Zoey finally had enough.
It left some good, fairly deep scratches on her nose. She looked pretty funny for a few days.

LOL
I've never been bitten by any of my leos....(knocks on wood) I just hope it isn't Spirit or Mr. Smiley :p (<--- our biggest geckos) I can't imagine needing stitches for a leopard gecko bite that just blows my mind.
