Biting

So I go in to get another gecko at petco and I figured I would get an adult female since I already have a pretty big male (would house them seperately for the time being). The associate goes to pick up the gecko and the whole time has has her she is steadily trying to bite him, should I be cautious of one that is this aggressive?

Well I havent decided if I am going to get it...I would be mad if after the QT time she was still that aggressive and hurt my patty.

Like any other undomesticated animal, leos can bite when they are afraid or annoyed. I've had little babies bite me and just hang on my finger, LOL! Most geckos will outgrow this behavior once they are used to you.

(I think you should avoid buying geckos from Petco... )

Like Marcia said, any animal that is not use to be handled is going to be nervous and sometimes aggressive. As far as whether to buy or not, thats your choice. If it looks healthy but just is aggressive, it can easily be tamed down. Your best bet IMO, is a reptile show, good prices and lots of good breeders.

Yes, PLEASE don't buy from Petco! They sell sick and dying leos. Its so sad :main_no: . I feel bad enough that I have to buy my supplies from there. The closest reptile shop is like 40 mins each way from me

I bought mine at Petco. I am very happy with her, but, I wouldn't recommend doing it. I had no knowledge of the problems with these stores at the time. Luckily, mine turned out perfectly fine. With that being said, I would buy a Petco leo over a family-owned store leo ANY day. From my experiences, Petco does a much better job than the small stores. I think breeders are by far your best option. These leos will be healthier, and you can ask the breeders about how aggressive each leo is.

I think the problem is people may see 1 or 2 local petcos that may be bad and assume their all bad and thats not the case. We have 2 local petcos here and their not that bad besides for a few things, but overall pretty good. I have 2 leos that I got from petco years back and still have both of them, both females and breeding :). If your able to get to a herp show or get one off a breeder, that is your best bet but that does not mean you cant get healthy leos at petco.

I have no idea how to even go about finding a reptile show...should be easy I live in a huge city (Houston, Texas)...but still have no clue where to even start looking (my patternless is from petco and he is doing great so far)...but I would still like to find a show or even a local breeder to get in contact with.

First off, ill adress the reptile shows, you can go onto kingsnake.com they have a listing of all the shows there for ya.

Second off, speaking of Petcos, all Petcos actully get their geckos from the same place. The care given for the geckos isnt always the best, but besides that petco geckos are known to carry things that arnt always visible right away. There have been cases of Crypto that have supposidly origionated from a Petco gecko... geckos can also carry other things like parasites. Point being just because a gecko looks healthy doesnt mean it is. Prime reason for the quarenteen peroid and getting a fecal of every new gecko done.
