Black Pearls?

Does anyone know where I can purchase a black pearl or even what the exact genetics are so I can breed my own? The few things that I have found say that it starts out completely random and then you just line breed til you get one, but I refuse to accept that because I am in love and I want one. (lol) So, yea. Please tell me that someone knows??....

You must be very rich to buy a Black Pearl! I think they come from Sweden and Poland (Black Pearls, Velvets, or whatever they are called there). Some people in the U.S. have "dark projects," but I don't know if that involves Black Pearls or just their own random dark mutations (hypermelanistic animals). Also, I think only females are being released, and very few. So if you don't have a male, there's no way to start a breeding project. Google geckoforums for pictures and more info! Most "black" geckos actually look quite grayish/brownish and are darker as hatchlings/juveniles than when they reach adulthood. Some of them look almost like dark Normals then.

Put your request into the WANTED section of the classifieds. Maybe someone will email you!

Good luck,
Chrissy

Thanks for the advice. :) I actually found a site yesterday that claimed to sell them, but said that they did not have any available at this time. I'm kid of sad, b/c they are so beautiful. ....

What you could do is create your own dark project. Usually, you just need to acquire a male and female hypermelanistic Normal and breed those together. Those are generally low-grade geckos and not very pricey. If you're lucky, you'll hatch some dark babies and can do line breeding. You have to decide if this is worth while for you. You'll also get lots of ordinary Normals that you have to sell.

I have two hypermelanistic female Snows. Those were random mutations (mother and daughter). I just bred to an ordinary Snow Enigma male, but the babies keep coming out dark. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't! Here's the mother. Here's her daughter, brightening up already.

If I were you, I would forget about darkish animals and switch over to awesome colors, like Emerines (from Bryan Jett or so). There are such BEAUTIFUL colors out there!!! They'll give you a better market than hypermelanistic Normals or Snows (unless you really manage to acquire Black Pearls and sell offspring, which is more unlikely but would probably be very profitable for you).

Or, wait a few years. Who knows, way down the road, Black Pearls might become available and be less expensive. However, once they ARE around, they won't be anything special anymore, and will lose their high demand.

Thanks for the advice LZRDGRL. All of the ones that we have now are brighter colors and I love them, but I have just always been more attracted to the darker colors for some reason. I suppose that I am just weird. (lol) Those geckos are gorgeous btw!! I especially love the daughter. Her pattern with the darker colors is beautiful. We have a super snow, patternless whose color seems to be changing. I've noticed that she has darkened A LOT since we first got her. Is it normal for their color to get darker over time? ....

If you want to have the daughter for cheap, PM me! I'm not going to keep her. I've read somewhere that patternless geckos get darker depending on temps and even mood!! Don't know whether the last one is true, but Murphy Patternless and Blizzards seem to get darker when they are colder (and maybe when they are grumpy?!?). Don't know whether this also applies to SS Patternless. Would be interesting! :D

Oh, and another source for you: if you like dark leos in general, there are Tangerines called Charcoal. They're basically brownish-bodied instead of orange. If you like those, they are not that expensive and are available in different places. Just do a search for dark Tangs...
