Blind gecko

I have recently discovered that my gecko has went blind. I had taken him to the vet and he flushed out his eyes with saline. He gave me drops to give him twice a day for 10 days. Once the infection did not clear up in that amount he said to try for another 10 days. There has still been no improvement. He always holds his eyes closed. The only time he opens them is when the drops are put in. When they are open his eye's are still there but they are very dark red. What I was wondering is does anyone know how he could have gotten this infection? Is he always going to be blind?

Does/did he have any discharge coming from his eyes? Are they just closed all the time?

From your post (and your avatar) he looks like an albino. Perhaps it's simply too bright in the room for him? Albinos have very sensitive eyes.

I have an albino and I do notice that its eyes will close if the light is shining too brightly into the tank. I actually don't even use lightening anymore. Since the tank isn't too far from the window, I just open the blinds every morning to let the natural light in. Thank you for the tip though! I never knew that albinos were more sensitive to light, but it makes sense to me now why mine was closing its eyes when the light was too much for him/her.

No, unfortunately its not just the light. Even when completely pitch black they remain closed. The day that I had taken him to the vet there was something in his eye I dont know if you would call it discharge or not. Although he pulled it out I noticed about a week later that the other eye then had the same thing in it and I pulled it out as well.

It looked white almost like shed skin but much more waterly. The best way i can describe it. It was pretty much completly over the eye.

Almost in a way I dont really know how else to describe it. Also he seems to be having a type of drainage that seals his eye lids shut now.

It sounds maybe like some sort of infection- I would go back to the vet, or go to a different vet. Something is obviously not right and your poor kid needs treatment. Probably you will need to change antibiotics, or do some more advanced imaging or something. It's possible that some stuck shed started the whole thing, but now it sounds out of control. Definitely go back to the same vet, or another vet with more reptile or ophthalmology experience.

And yes- geckos can get cataracts. I have one with some minor ones, but he's 16+ years old.

Ok, Ill give the vet a call and see what should be done next. Ill keep you all posted on what he says. He is pretty new into the vet world so maybe hes just still to inexperienced. I would like to know what you all think when I talk to him again.
