blood in stool

So I bought this cute little Red Stripe baby, Mayflower, at a reptile show last Saturday, Aug. 28th. Her tail was a little on the thin side, but her belly was quite round (picture), and she made an overall healthy appearance; very alert, running around, and eating wax worms.

She was in a quarantine tank with her two baby sisters (from the same vendor).

On Sept. 1st I noticed bloody stool in her quarantine tank (I didn't know from whom it was, but I took it out immediately. It looked like menstruation blood in humans; quite slimy and with solid particles in it *sorry, gross!). It was quite a lot for a baby gecko (the size of an adult gecko's poop). I was worried about parasites, so I disinfected everything with bleach. All three babies seemed fine, were eating crickets, and walking around. That same evening, there was another, much smaller spot of rather liquid (not slimy) blood on the paper towel in her cage.

This time, I knew it was from her, since she didn't walk normally any more; she dragged her belly on the ground and stumbled a bit, and often laid down with half-closed eyes.

She died on Thursday, Sept. 2nd., in the early morning hours. She was very pale, but on her back was a big black dot shimmering through her skin. Internal bleeding? Burst organ?

Do you think I need to worry about parasites (I cleaned with bleach)? The other two babies are still doing very well and are growing. She's probably been housed with them since birth, so if she had it, they will have it, too.

Sorry, but I didn't take any photos.

Not all parasites can be cleaned with bleach. What you really needed to have done was bring in a stool sample to the vet. Barring that, a necropsy of your dead baby is in order. Remove the others babies from the tank in the meantime.

It is not typical for all babies to be housed together for a multitude of reasons. Quarantine is housing alone to determine the health status of each animal. You should be very concerned about the health of your other two babies. In looking at your phote, the baby looks out of proportion with a round body and skinny tail. Something going on there. Since you've had it less than a week it's likely that it was sick before. Maybe it wasn't obvious. If you got it from a reputable breeder, they would want to know if there were serious problems.
