Do breeders do ok at making a living with the market sky rocketing downward or do you all have other jobs as well?

Most breeders either have spouses that work or have a day time job. This isn't a get rich quick scheme.

I think the only people that are successful at making a living at breeding most likely wholesale large amounts of their hatchlings each year to pet stores…

I did it last year with cresteds,Pictus & leos. You have to have a lot of animals to do it as your job. I didnt have enough and had to pick up a part time job.

I don't think many can do it. Look up some back threads on how much $ a breeder really makes and what they put out for taxes. Most break even for the most part.

It takes a lot to breed on a large scale. The more animals you keep the more expensive it becomes. My collection is relatively small and I have to expand my rack as it is, I don't even attempt to sell Leos yet. With the economy being what it is at the moment it wouldn't be easy to recover any investment cash. Breeding Leos is more a labor of love than an occupation IMO. Most of the people with the newest morphs that draw the big numbers are well established. It takes some time to develop a good reputation. Spending big on a pair of any given morph definitely won't make you rich, by the time one breeds them the price will almost surely drop.

Out of ALL the people I know that breed geckos professionally, only a handful are able to make a living doing it... and as was said earlier, these breeders produce literally thousands of geckos per year and mainly provide them wholesale to big-box pet stores.

When you consider the expense of food, electricity, supplements, cleaning supplies, shipping etc... you don't make much from this hobby. I do not think the reward for serious breeders comes from cash. I think it is the satisfaction and joy of creating something (new morphs or a really pretty gecko). I got out of the gecko breeding for a while and I realized just how much I missed it (which was a lot).. This is the true satisfaction... Breeding is a very relaxing and enjoyable hobby for most people...
