Ive had leos for a few years but this year is the first time I tried to breed them but when I put my two high yellow geckos together the male started to beat his tail and when he bit her she bit him back and he ran to the other side of the cage and I seperated them. Now I am afraid to put them together because they may get hurt. Is it normal for a female to not want to mate or should I try again? Thanks for taking the time to help!

It's not unusual for the female to chase off the male at first. This may be because she isn't ovulating or has to get used to the idea. In the best situation, the male will back off when she isn't receptive and not try again for awhile. Hopefully she will eventually let him mate. This has happened with all of my geckos. The only time there is a problem is if the male is too persistent and rough with the female. If he stays away from her for awhile after she chases him away it will probably be OK (and I think some geckos are more "comfortable" mating late at night with the lights out). I recommend you keep an eye on them and as long as no one is getting seriously bitten, it's probably OK.

if the female is not ovulating its very possible she is just not wanting to mate, look at her tummy and see if you see 2 pink circles about the size of a pencil eraser head, that will indicate if she is ovulating, once you see the pink circles try again.
