ok
looking at breeding leos
right now, male and female in separate housing.

fattening up female and male for breeding in amonth.

now, when i put them together -

1) do they jsut breed?
or do i need to trigger it? how do i artificially trigger it with out delving into seasons naturally?

2) what is the procedure, there are plenty of info on the net but woudl like experience of people here.
once they have mated - do i separate them?
or jsut leave them together and let the female lay eggs?

i hear that when she lays, you m ust separate then and fatter her up again and rest her, and couple of weeks - then mate them again?

any info on this would be great:D

Breeding season is generally Jan-Sept, but it all depends on when the female is ovulating and some females can ovulate at different times.

When put together, most males will attempt to mate, though some seem to prefer to wait till they're not being observed. Most females will accept the male if they are ovulating, otherwise will bite them to let them know they're not interested. Mating has an element of violence to it and so does refusing, especially if one of the parties does not take "no" for an answer. It's a bit of a judgement call sometimes to know when they need to be separated because they're getting too violent. A rule of thumb is that scratches are OK, gashes are not.

The female can store sperm so will continue to produce fertile eggs for a number of clutches, how many depends on the female.

I leave my male with the females for the entire season. Others introduce and separate so they'll have to tell you about their schedule.

Hopefully you also have plans for incubator, lay boxes, incubator containers, housing and food for babies, visits to the vet in case there is a problem, sufficient funds to cover all of this.

k

i have all the gear already

oik im in new zealand.
so my months and seasons may vary with you guys.

Summer December - February
Autumn March - May
Winter June - August
Spring September - November

so when is the best time to put them together and when willt he female ovulate?
i was planning this march, in one months time to put them together.
but if thats wrong then jsut let me know.
i was told by many awhile back when plannign on this that it actually doesnt matter when you put them together so long as female is able to mate and take the male.

is this true?
that ovulation is triggered by a drop then increase in temp?

Leopard geckos don't seem to need the temperature change as much as other species. Many people don't "cool" their geckos. My geckos actually seem to be more sensitive to the amount of light and duration of "daytime". Geckos can ovulate at any time, it's just most common for it to happen from early spring to summer. It doesn't hurt to try putting them together. At worst, nothing much may happen till Sept.

Where in NZ are you from? I was there quite a long time ago on my honeymoon with my bicycle.
