I am just starting to breed my geckos.
I put liquid calcium in my males water because he wont eat the powder.
i dont think it will but i want to make sure about this, if i put a alcium dish in for my female will that be too much calcium for her or will that liquid calcium be bad for her nutrition?
im new to breeding and any input you have to help would be great.
I dont want to start breeding until i know everything i have to know.

I honestly have no idea about the liquid calcium for the male. Are you dusting your feeder insects? If so, you shouldn't have to give liquid calcium in that case. And adding it to his water may actually affect his interest in drinking (change in taste or consistency can throw him off), which may put him at risk of dehydration. I would remove the liquid calcium and just go back to dusting insects. Do the same for the female, and both animals should be fine.

Perhaps an experienced breeder could chime in about the calcium needs of gravid/egg-laying female geckos?

I use Repashy Calcium Plus dusted at every feeding, no calcium dish or other supplementation is needed with it.

+1

You can try a lighter dusting so it doesn't throw the taste. If they're hungry they'll eat it. If they aren't really that hungry they won't if they don't really want it. That's one reason not to feed every day, but every other day instead. A lot is lost in evaporation putting calcium in the water so you can't really be sure how much he has been getting.

Repashy calcium plus is supposed to be all you need, though I do put a small calcium (without D3) dish in with the babies. One way to get the male to take the calcium is to dip your finger in water, then dip it in the calcium powder and rub it around his mouth. He'll probably lick it up to clean himself. Unless your geckos are ovulating now, it's likely you'll be breeding next early spring because for most geckos breeding season is over or ending. For breeding hints it's a good idea to google "leopard gecko breeding" and read people's caresheets. Another trick, that I've posted about before, is to read posts here and on other forums. Every time you find something that seems useful, copy and paste it into your own document and you'll end up with pages of useful info that you won't have to search around for.

Minerals do not evaporate, they will become more concentrated as water evaporates from the dish. That is how distilled water is made, as the water is heated and turns to vapor it leaves all of the mineral content behind, then the vapor is allowed to condense and is collected as pure water.

Ahh ok thanks Tony!

I've heard of some bad results (thin-shelled eggs) using repashy calcium. We have always used the Repcal calcium, calcium with D3, and Herptivite. We always left the calcium in a dish, dusted everyother feeding with D3, and the other feedings with the herptivite multivitamin. It seemed to work well for us.
