Buying from a perstore.

Thank you all for your replies! =D

I've already checked around my area, and there aren't any leopard gecko breeders. The only downside to paying for shipping and the animal itself is that I would have to pay in cash as I do not have a credit card. I don't know if any breeders allow sending in cash for an animal and shipping costs.

As for the petco, I've bought animals from them before, but they weren't reptiles. My pet bird (now 7 years old) came from petco and he's never had a problem and only a few minor unrelated to petstore problems. I knew what to look for when I bought him though because both my parents have owned birds before. I also bought a mouse from petco before and it lived a very fat happy life before my boyfriend fed it to his snake. I knew what to look for with the mouse too though because I've bought mice before, and my boyfriend had several mice. (They were all snake food.)

As for the 100 dollar pet store, Pet Kingdom, that I mentioned, I might think about buying from that one. There are pros and cons from that store. They don't have an animal return and many of their animals are from mills. I know someone who's bought a puppy from there and it died overnight. She never got a refund because the cause of death came out as unknown. The pros are that my boyfriend has purchased a healthy corn snake from there before and it's never needed a vet trip once.

I bought both of my leopard geckos from chain pet stores - one from Petco and one from Petsmart. In both cases, I chose the largest, healthiest looking one. I haven't had any issues that I believe resulted from the pet store care. My female had a problem with her eye and needed a vet trip, but I believe that was caused because I had her on sand for about a month, and after changing away from that, she was fine.

Some of the pet stores have really skinny looking geckos and you should stay away from them for sure. Don't ever buy one because you feel sorry for it and want to help. It might have parasites or other problems.

A reputable breeder is your best bet for a healthy animal with a rare morph, but it will be more expensive. Probably worth the extra money in the long run, but pet stores are usually cheaper and will do just fine if you are careful.

WHAT?? Not to change the subject here, but you bought a mouse, and raised it, and let your boyfriend feed it to his snake! WHAT????

Yes, it was originally a companion animal I bought for one of his other mice because he had one lonely female in his last litter.
