Well, I've had Chico, my crestie, for nearly 2 months now. What a fantastic animal!

Needless to say, I'd love to eventually breed these guys and, of course, get more!

Would it be a bad idea to buy him a female friend around the same size? He's obviously a boy and probably about half the size of an adult.

Not until you are ready to breed. If he's a male, and you introduce a female, she may or may not be ready to breed.

If you want another, house it separately until you are ready to breed them and they are ready to be bred.

I don't see any problem with him growing up with a female of about the same age. Species do this in the wild and will mate when their ready.
I have done this with leo's cresties and tokays

I house juvies and young pairs together. There is very little to no risk at all. Males will not breed until their bulge is developed and females will not breed until they are ready, if they're not ready they wont breed.

If you have two males that will not work.
