Calcium is just Calcium Carbonate correct?

Is there any difference in reptile calcium and calcium I might take?

I guess my root question is

can I buy calcium and use a mortar and pestle to grind it?

I wouldn't. We use Osteo-Form, which in essence is a Horse Calcium, but it is pure calcium. We also use Vionate, which is a multi-vitamin for Mammals, and we also use Rep-Cal Calcium with d3 in it (every once in a while).

josh have you ever looked to see if vionate has D3 in it? if it does you might be able stop using the rep-cal with D3 all together (might be cheaper lol)

You can use human-grade, tablet form calcium, but it is pretty expensive and time-consuming to grind up. Also, many tablet form supplements have a coating on them to make it easier to swallow, as well as other ingredients that may not be suitable for reptiles. I use pure calcium carbonate power from NOW FOODS and it's only about $4.00 for a 12 oz. container.
