Account for ALL expenses... Electricity (Seriously), cages, racks, feeding, heat sources, the geckos themselves, time needed...
If I consider the amount of time needed - I end up making about NEGATIVE $3.50/hour. :main_rolleyes: and we sell lots of other stuff besides geckos.
Doing NOTHING but breeding/selling geckos... Unless you are breeding 100+ per year - it's going to be VERY difficult to break even. Never mind profit. :main_no:
But if it's a hobby that every once and awhile throws a couple bucks in your pocket - then why not? :main_thumbsup:
Honestly I do not make a profit, yet. I only have 1 male and 3 females, and dont sale any babies yet. I do belive that if u have a large colony, and varitey you could make sometype of profit,
I think it depends on reputation and the quality of animals you sell but mainly reputation. As I have completed 1 season of breeding I don't really have a rep so I lose money.
I don't think for most of us on here we are after a profit. I know that I would like to be making one in three years or so but I just can't see how you can go into this and think about profit until you have made connections, been to a few shows as a seller and get to know all your expenses.
I own my own web development and marketing company and can say that as we have grown we have learned so much more about stuff we thought we already knew.
As I'm sure many of you feel the same way, if you are in this just for a profit you probably won' t be doing it long enough to make one.
