Can I feed compost worms to my gecko

Hi,

We have had our gecko about 2 weeks, and have been feeding crickets and mealworms. I was wondering if I could feed the gecko compost worms (aka red worms). They look like earthworms, and range in size from miniscule when they just hatch, to around 2 inches long. I have 2 vermicomposting bins and have literally hundreds of worms continually breeding all the time. They are fed on shredded newspaper, carrot juice pulp and peatmoss mainly.

Would these be safe for the gecko?

It would be a very economical food source, as they are always there.

Thanks,

Alison

I would say no, only because they really aren't in the geckos native diet, and two you dont really know how sterile the worms are(because you probably arent going to wash them inside and out). I would reccomend breeding mealworms, just take oatmeal and pour about an inch or so into a plastic, tub put carrots lettuce( actually whatever you might put in your compost that is a vegetable) and dump in a tub or two of mealworms and they'll breed on their own if their in a warm area.

Thanks,

I guess if I'm breeding red worms, it wouldn't be that hard to breed mealworms! I'll give that a try...

Yeah, neither are the cricket, mealworms, supers, ethc. Id agree on just breeding some supers or mealies for best results. Much healthier for the animal since you can control exactly what they eat.

I gave one to Echo, he walked up to it very cautiously, sniffed it, licked it, and walked away.
