Crickets, worms, grasshoppers, and mini size crickets would be the safest to give them, I cannot image they give you anything that could harm your animal like the caterpillars, and snails, but would assume the later two are more for other species.

I haven’t had any luck with getting geckos or any other herps for that matter to eat freeze-dried foods, although I have tried them once or twice. I believe this to be because of their lack of movement. At this time there are bowls that vibrate to make them move, the disadvantages of these, is one they make noise with can scare the geckos away, and two they only work when you press a button, and then only stay on for 30 sec, so you would have to have a lot of time to be there to feed your geckos, unless they are one of the ones that eats immediately.
