So I posted a question about basic genetics in the "terms we use in the hobby but haven't gotten a response yet. I don't understand what "het" means and would love some more insight. I browsed the forum but didn't really see a thread that really helped. Thanks and if there is a thread and I missed it sorry. Thanks.

"Het" is short for "heterozygous", meaning that there are 2 genes for a specific characteristic and the creature has 1 of each gene ("het" means "different"). This term is usually used when a gecko has a single gene for a recessive trait. The recessive trait is only visible if a gecko has 2 genes for it. If the gecko has only 1 gene for the trait, it will not show it, but can pass it on to its offspring. I wrote an article last summer about this and used a pair of my geckos as examples. It's here:

I've put together a better understanding of genetics 101, if you check out my website and look under projects, there is just a little about genetics. If you have additional questions let me know.

nice write up on genetics but may I make a suggestion, use something other then trempers and bells for your examples as this may lead people to think its ok to cross the albinos.
