My local Petco was selling a few baby leopard geckos. They sold all of them except for one. It was about three inches long and was extremely orange. I was thinking that it might be a tangerine. Should I get it for $17.00?:main_huh:

If you have the room and the resources for it and it looks healthy, why not?

I have the setup. Would you need a heat lamp if you had a heat mat? The guy at the pet store was trying to get me to buy both. I have seen racks and other cage setups with just heat mats. Is that okay?

That is a good price if it is healthy looking. You do not need a heat lamp if the mat gets the floor temps up to 88 deg..

DON'T listen to the p[eople at the pet store, you can just use a heat mat. They are probably telling you they need uvblight and all that stuff. When i was just looking around and asking about leos, they told me so much stuff that i found out you didnt need or wasn't true. Maybe it was just my petstore. They don't even really know how 2 house them. There was 2 hatchlings and 1 hide a waterdish and a bunch of crickets in the cage.

You have to be careful with petstore advice...some employees are good...many are not. You really should not take any one person's advice for 100% correct without doing some of your own research. Being an employee of Petco myself and having been to many different petstores accross the country I can tell you that there are many employees with very very limited knowledge....but there are some that really do know their stuff. You really need to be careful about who you listen to. It always amazes me at work how much some people expect us to know....I get asked a LOT of questions that are questions that only a veterinarian could reliably answer. There are many who would choose to listen to a petstore employee over their vet!! Anyway....moral of the story is to not to look to any individual person as a source of information...always look for multiple sources of information...such as this website with many experienced breeders/keepers who can all give good advice.....when it all agrees...its generally good advice :)

And yeah...leos don't need any special lighting...as long as a heat pad gets to the correct temperature range, you don't need any other source of heat.

As far as getting them...I have a pair of youngsters I picked up at work just before valentine's day (when they were 17.99....plus my employee discount...hehe)....they are doing great and are going to be absolutely gorgeous animals!....I'm having to resist buying more pretty babies after looking in the enclosure today...lol Just make sure that you get one that looks healthy. Its unfortunate that we are forced to keep the hatchlings on sand...but as long as you take him/her off of it you shouldn't see any problems. Petco also has a 15 day health guarantee...if you decide to take it home and notice ANY weight loss during those 15 days, bring it back to the store! Generally they will take it to the vet and you will be able to get the same animal back if it returns to health.....there is no guarantee on that....but I know that's how we try to work things at the store I work at.

My local pet store told me i needed UV lighting because, "all reptiles do." i then asked why a leo would need one if they were nocturnal and never came out in actual sun light. The lady thought about it for a sec and then said, "cause all reptiles do?"

Stina-very good advice and well put!!

Ray-don't let them sell you anything that is unnecessary-esp. calci-sand

Just ask here if you have any more questions and/or do a search of Leo set-up questions here before you buy your supplies and your Leo

At my pet store they are selling juvies for £35, which i still think is a wee bit of a over priced gecko.
