Yo, I've studied leopard geckos for like 1 year now and really want a couple of them. The problem is my parents dont understand that they are easy to care for and takes like no place at all. I've been wanting a pet since i was 5 and now i'm getting 15 years old in 1 mounth. My mums got a sickness called Parkinson and she say that she cant live with a pet around. But the gecko will be in my room all the time! LOL :p

How did you guys get your parents to let you keep geckos if you had any problems with convincing to say yes??

Sorry for my bad english

I was out of the house before i got my geckos so luckily that wasnt an issue lol

I did get my corn snake however when i was still living at home and 2 cats and a rabbit but my mum is kind of a push over. She looks after mine when i go on my holls. Every pet i wanted when i was living at home she told me no first but i would take her out to the pet store and let her see it and she would change her mind. I think my mum loves my snake and leopards as much as i do. And one of my cats refused to move with me and stayed with my mum lol

Good luck.

well i just pestered and pestered for weeks :) I kept talking about leopard geckos, researching and purposely printing it out and reading it around my parents and taking photos of leopard geckos at college and at my volunteer job and showing them :D and once I had all the money i needed, i worked all the costs out and then I just kept moaning that I had enough money and I'd done all my research and that they would love it ^ ^ (they'd never owned any reptiles or anything) and everyone in my house now loves my gecko :D

Personally I would propose to your mom that leos are cage kept unlike dogs and cats that she could trip over because of her disease, also that there is no cast off (odors, fur, dander, etc) from leos that could upset her condition, that you don't expect her to care for the leo (and you absolutely HAVE to make sure she's never in a position where she would have to care for your leo), and that if you did a nice natural set up it could be quite attractive to look at and possibly even soothing for her to watch him. I would take her out to meet them in person first. Maybe a petshop near you has some she could look at and possibly hold before making a final decidion. Educate her, show her how inexpensive it is to keep them, prove to her that you would be 100% responsible for the pet, and if you ever don't live up to your end of the bargain be prepared to rehome your leo. I find a lot of hesitation on parents about getting pets for their kids is that they ehink they'll end up doing the lions share of the work, that their kids aren't educated enough on that animals needs to care for it on thier own, but being nearly 15 I think you'd be fine. My 14 yr old son started asking me for a snake when he was 6. he got his first Ball on his 11th birthday because that was when I felt he was ready and responsible enough to handle the lions share of caring for HIS snake.

My dad kept saying things like "they're poisonous, it'll escape, it will bite you" which are obviously not true about leos. So I wrote a list for my parents saying things like "I will spend all of my own money on it. They do not have teeth to bite you, they are not poisonous, they cannot climb up glass or walls or anything" and just about all the positives of leopard geckos. Then they realized that it would not kill our whole family lol. My mom still will not look at my leo though ;) They won't care for her either so you have to make sure you have someone that can take care of it while you are away.

Thanks for all the answers :) I think the problem is that they think i dont have enough time to care for it since i play hockey, skiing and unicycle a lot :p I'll try to make a list of positive things about them and proove that i'm mature enough to care for it.

Thanks again! //Erik

I'm about the same age as you, and my parents generally don't like pets besides fish haha I'm so surprised my parents are actually letting me get one xD But the way I worked was by giving them no choice, or should I say, no reason to say no. I said they don't take up much space, they'll never have to see it if they don't want to, it doesn't even cost a lot of money, and it's super easy to take care of. I also said it would help me in becoming a vet in a way xD I think one of the biggest things that helped convince them was, "You won't let me get a dog, a cat, or a hamster, so how about a leopard gecko? I mean, (and I listed all the above reasons). They never really said yes or okay, but Petco was having a big sale, so my dad was like alright...fine...get the supplies. Then, they said you're not getting it unless you do your chores. So I've been doing my chores...kind of...not really...but Petco is having their $1 per gallon and my dad is like YAYSOCHEAP! so we went out and got it and I know I'm definitely getting one now because it would be too much trouble to return everything. So the tank kind of sealed the deal haha So have you ever begged for a dog or cat or any other animal? If you have, just say what I said. Then, your mom hopefully would agree so she can never hear, "Mom, can I PLEASE get a dog?!?!?!" again xD Good Luck!!! And keep updating because I can help you along. I'm a pretty good persuader for some things, so I hope I helped!

Leopard geckos do not need a lot of time. They prefer not to be handled 24/7, I probably only handle mine for 10 min every few days, sometimes more or less. With school and homework, I don't have very much time either but they are great pets and do not need as much time as a puppy or kitten, etc. All the time they need is a quick temperature check to make sure the temps are ok and daily feeding/ feeding every other day depending on the gecko and what/how you choose to feed. Also, just making sure they have water/ humidity in its moist hide for shedding. Handling is a plus :)

How Do I?

How did you guys get your parents to let you keep geckos if you had any problems with convincing to say yes??

These usually work:
*Trick your parents into signing over the
house into your name.
You then can call the shots, telling them
they can't have tea in the mornings unless
you have a gecko.
** Let them know you plan to move to the USA
where everyone has to own a gecko.
*** Dress it up in a tiny suit of clothes and pass it off
as your small school chum staying with you.
****It's a school project. No gecko/Failing grade.
*****You are starting a car insurance advertisement.
he's staring in the video you are making.
Lots of $$ / Uro's/Quid/francs/gold will be made.
******Scream until you turn blue and pass out,
scaring them into buying you a couple.
Take care. HJ

Just Saw Your Post
My mum finally said OK I'm so happy

Maybe it would not be a good time to ask for a second one.
CONGRATS.

Awesome :main_thumbsup: pick wisely young grasshopper, don't buy the first one that comes along. Make sure your tank is up and running at least a week before you get your leo that way you can tweak any issues before your animal is in there. and honestly for some one your age (I know you teens can get busy) and a first time leopard gecko owner I'd suggest an all in one suppliment like Repashy calcium plus icb or T-Rex leopard gecko dust icb with sandfire superfoods. Or if you're in the UK I'm sure we have a member or 2 (looking at your Jordan :D ) that can direct you to local all in one suppliments. It just makes the supplimenting process soooo much easier imo. I love it.

So happy for you... congrats :main_yes:

Happy Birthday ;)

Start breeding only if after a year your original leo is still alive, then at that take another 6 mos to seriously educate yourself on breeding leos. Suppliments are easy enough if you go with an all in 1 like Repashy clacium plus icb or T-Rex leopartd gecko dust icb by sandfire foods. Depending on the age of the leo you dust every feeding or every other feeding once around 7 mos old. Again tho it all depends on YOUR specific leo and their needs. I dust my healthy 11 mos old male every other feeding.

What's so fun about keeping leos... they're curious, the are cute and pretty, and fun to watch and they SMILE :D now how many lizards can do that :)
