Capital of Maine

Ok. So um... This may sound stupid, but has Augusta always been the capital of Maine? I thought it was Portland? I thought I was pretty good at my capitals... :-(

LOL yeah.... it's always been Augusta. Maybe you are just thinking how some people consider Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine the two big cities farthest apart, or something along those lines.

It's a common mistake even in New England. I think it because Portland is much more happening so you here about it more.

I've heard people say that before, but about 75% of the time, a capital city isn't even the largest, or even second largest city of the state.

The same with Alaska. Juneau is the capital, but everyone thinks its Anchorage since that's the biggest city

Yup... I live in Illinois... Captial is Springfield. I believe we have 5 cities with larger populations. It is like that in almost every state I can think of.
