hi my poor geckos Shy {male} and ShowGurl {obviously female} just had their tank broken into by both of my cats. luckily i was in the kitchen when it happened. i heard a crash bang and a strange hissing noise, and went running into the living room. both cats were inside my 50 gallon. Shy has nothing wrong with him (besides being terrified) ShowGurl has some scratches on her back, and one on the side of her mouth. no bleeding or anything. scratch that, she bled a lil behind her shoulder. is there a topical ointment i can use on her to help prevent infection? They are both a little over a year old, and are, well were, in top condition. shes alert, n still very upset. i picked her up to check the damage and she alternates between licking me n opening her mouth. :main_huh: please post or email me back at [email protected]. thanx so much. i added pics of her injuries. a scratch on her head, one on her back, and one on her lower jaw. thats all there is on her.

is that silver cream? ppl use it to treat burns or bad spider bites. i may be able to buy it in a drug store, i'll check. if i cant find that, is there something else i can use? i was hoping for something i could get my hands on today... do you know of anything ? can i use bacitracin, or triple antibiotic ointment? i know i can use it on my cats. but i wouldn't use it on a reptile unless some one recommended it. as i dont know the effects it could have.

In the meantime, I would do warm water soaks, in sterile water, if possible (boil it for 10 or 15 minutes then refrigerate it) three times a day. I would use a generic triple antibiotic in the meantime. The goal is to keep the wounds as clean as possible.

i have a 3 month old, plenty of sterile purified water in the house! i'm going to run to the pharmacy in a lil while. will check for the silver cream first, if none will def get the triple antibiotic ointment. thank you so much! im beside myself! im also going to see how i can prevent my cats from getting in. they actually flipped the lid open, and hopped down into the tank!

Just saw this thread. Pretty much everything that I could think to do has already been mentioned so I'm just here for moral support lol. It really doesnt look too terrible, I've seen worse on the females during breeding season, ugh. You probably wont be able to even notice the marks in a couple sheds. If you go to a pet store or reptile store, you can pic up some cage clips used for larger lizards and snakes, they shuld keep your cat out :)

the prob with my tank is that it was a fish tank. so it has 2 of those covers that go underneath the hood. the kind that u flip up to feed the fish. the back spaces that were open i sealed with screening. im thinking of attaching a latch to the front of both lids, so that only ppl with thumbs can open it. idk why i didnt think of this problem b4. my cats are forever tagteaming things. one jumps on the door knob, while the other pulls the bottom of the door to open it. i feel horrible because this could have been prevented. i just didnt think of it.

You might consider getting a regular reptile screen top that can be secured with clips. Glad you were home and able to stop the troublemakers!

Ditto... a reptile screen won't set you back much and you'll have the piece of mind that your kitties can never harm your herps again.

This stuff is AMAZING. You can't buy it in the stores, you can only order it online or get it through a vet. But it's safe enough for me to recommend it.

Could she go to the vet's office and get some Nolvasan Flush for the wounds? I know the last thing they recommend, for dogs at least, is to apply an ointment to puncture wounds as you run the risk of trapping bacteria in the wound. I used the flush on my yellow lab who had a bad pad gnash and in 3 days it was already pretty well healed.

That's the stuff my vet gave me to put on Lemsip's amputation wound; the silver sulf cream. He told me to use it GENEROUSLY, not just a thin layer (but that's to an amputation wound). :main_yes:

With the scratches, its just very small injury. I'd say its ok to clean it and leave it to heal on its own.

Glad your girl is doing good!

My bf built a rack for christmas tree tubs a few years ago and this year is using it for 55gal aquariums with the big snakes. Set on the tank front to the screen top is a front opening, it's been perfect. I told him just last week I'd like to do that with our 20 longs, made to match a huge display rack he made. None of which would be for my sweet little geckos. When it cools off a bit more here we will be starting on my tub racks. I wish I had the space in my lizard room for a nice display rack.

i was trying to come up with a way to stack them but still put lighting in it. i wish there was a diy page where i could get more info. gonna go search.

the racks are a great idea! i know i could order wood precut, building it would be a cinch! im just trying to figure out the front, as i dont want them coming into contact with the screen at all!
