Do geckos prefer smaller spaces, larger spaces, or does it not really matter?
I guess what I'm saying is do they like having a lot of room to move in their hide or do they prefer to be less roomy.

I think larger hides are better because theyre darker and provide more hiding space.

Leos love to squeeze themselves into tight places.

When I give them the choice between a Exo Terra rock cave and
a slab of 1/4'' slate that is only an inch above the floor, they always
pick the slate.

Yea, they feel more safe in small hiding places, with something touching their back.

I had a big cave for Puzzle and he didn't use it all all. I switched today and put a much smaller moist hide and a much smaller cool hide, one of those half coconut things, and he went in immediately. He loves it. I think he feels safer in the smaller space. Before, he was hiding underneath the thermometer I had in there. It was like he was trying to find the tiniest space he could and squeeze into it.

They like to squeeze in to small spaces but smaller hides are often wide open and inefficient. A large hide that is low to the ground would be ideal.

I figured I would switch back to the bigger one when he is a bit bigger. He's still teeny and I think the bigger one overwhelmed him a bit. I agree with you Bennayboi about them not liking the wide open part, I think that is what he didn't like about it. The half coconut I got him is completely enclosed, but not so tiny he has to squish himself. It looks like this:

He will totally grow out of it in a few months, tho.
