You can get a Basic Herpstat for around $109.00 at Beanfarm. I recommend the Helix DBS-1000 but Herpstats aren't terrible either.

Herpstat is basic. Why be cheap and buy a bad thermostat when there are herpstats, helix's for 80+ that are 100% safe. Some of the worse ones will cook the geckos too.

IMO, I'd put it this way - the thermostat isn't where you should save money. Almost everything else can be done cheaply versus off-the-shelf items. That said, I think you can find pretty reliable thermostats for around $40-50.

If you're using the thermostat to keep the temp stable for your gecko tubs (not egg incubation), I can't see why you can't get a cheaper on/off model. I think they work fine but you'll need to monitor the temps more often. I had used the Alife thermostats for years with no problem, although some people claim they malfunction easily, but mine seems to worked fine for me. I had about 4-5 units, all of them worked fine.

p.s. I have switched to Helix now; not because the Alife was bad, just that I could afford a higher end model so I went for it. I guess you can use a cheaper model at the moment, then upgrade later on. :)

hmmmmmmmm If your not going to pay the money for the right equipment maybe you should rethink geckos.

That right there pisses me off. Rethink geckos??? Im sorry, i dont usually get this mad but that comment really upsets me. I take great care of my geckos. Im only 13. I dont have a job and i dont get free money. I dont really have $150.00 to spend on a thermostat. Now maybe saying under $25 was a little to low. I can see 30 or 40 but right now i cant really afford $150. Please think before you comment.

I`m 14, but seriously if you can't afford the right equipment maybe this really isn't the right hobby for you. I figure if you can afford geckos how can you not afford the proper tools for them? I think you should also should rethink your comment, John is one of the greatest gecko keepers you can ever meet. Trust me I know we all can't afford equipment all at once but this isn't a hobby where you can be cheap.

You know what, im not going to turn this into an argument that is already becoming. All i wanted was a simple answer as to where i could find a fair priced thermostat. A few people gave me answers but some people just upset me and were no help at all as to what i was asking. I found the answer to my question on another forum, and thanks to those who gave me sites here also, but could a moderator or admin please close this thread? Thank you.

Hey Justan... last week I got a Prepti-temp Rheostat at PetCo for $14.99 .. just about $15 anyways... I have 4 one foot sections of flex watt ran to it in-line and I'm using tile for substrate. It took me about 24 hours to find the right spot to set my rheostat at but I've been able to get it to stay at 90 for a week now with no problems. I do check my temps quite a few times a day just to make sure it's holding but so far so good.
I use a Raytek MiniTemp to mesure temps. I stole it from my husband who uses it to check the temps on his RC cars. This one cost about $80 but I think you could probably find one for less if you checked around.

Hope that helps you out.

Your the one wanting to go cheap. That is a dirrect quate from you. Sure fry your geckos. I don't want to read any poor me I fried my gecko sob story. Even a ZooMed 500R is better then one of those Rheostats and they are around $45.00 but apperantly that is even out of your budget so my comment still stands.

Im a total noob with leos, but I use thermostats on many enclorues. No sense in risking a malfunction with a cheapo temp controling system. You can get decent ones on ebay or even craigslist for a bit under $100 that can handle multiple heating elements. I personally use big appl and the habbistats, and have never had issues.
