Im running into a problem at home. If some of you dont know im serving in Iraq and my wife is taking care of 3.16 geckos for me while im away. My wife has been having trouble with my oldest gecko shedding. The gecko is about 6 years old. My gecko is having trouble getting the shed off of her feet. My wife says that my geckos nails look to be hooking up. My friend (GeckoGathering) who is more experienced with geckos than my wife, came by to look at my gecko's feet and came up with the same conclusion. So does anyone know of any way i can shorten the nails? She is housed on tile so she has a pretty hard surface to walk on. I dont think i should have my wife try and trim her nails. I know in birds if you trim too deep the nail can bleed and is really hard to stop. Does anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, I would be affraid to do it for the same reason you mentioned (bleeding). When I trimed bird nails, I used a pen light to see through the nail so I could see the vein in the middle.
With birds, you can put sandpaper perches in their cage, A leo? I dont know.

I would take the gecko to a vet.

The town that im from has no vet specialized in reptiles. I was taking my geckos to one local vet but he didnt know too much about leopard geckos. Recently my friend took one of his oldest geckos to this vet and the vet scared him so much he drooped his tail. The gecko died shortly after. This gecko is my oldest and favorite gecko and im afraid to lose her. Thanks for the pen light idea.

I wouldn't try repti carpet if her nails are already long. They can snag or get caught in it and that could be bad too if she tries to rip it out.

I agree. I had to remove my repti carpet because my leos were getting stuck to it. And they had NORMAL nails!

can get hold of rocks or stones make sure they are safe to but in ie bake them

but if they are rough and your geckos climbs on them over time that should do the trick

tile ( i does not matter if the surface is hard its the roughness that wears them down )

I know this lady that comes in every so often to give me a bath and she now trims my toenails. Maybe I could get her to swing by your place, after you get home to do some trimming.

One of our geckos seems to have shedding problems too, due to his nails. We just give him a warm water soak for thirty minutes, and then gently rub the skin off, it works pretty well.

And yes, if you did find a way to trim the nails, you'd have to be extra careful not to cut into the quick, as that is what will give you the excessive bleeding, and it is also extremely painful.

Yes, it sounds an awful lot like that lady's procedure...with a little trim added....

The tile i have is fairly rough. It has small raised areas so it looks more like rock. Ill try putting some rocks in her cage. We soak her if she cant get the shed off by herself. Thanks for your input. Ill have to get HJ's lady to come over and give pedicures all around.

Try having your wife soak him in warm water for 15-30 minutes and then gently rubbing at his toes (if yu can get him to hold still, lol). It should take the shed off no problem! I wouldny suggest trimming his nails though. Even if you could get you gecko to hold still for that, he might jerk and you clip too far in or worse, clip his toe completely off. )=
