Are you breeding this gecko? I think that has a lot to do with color sometimes...also, is he/she in a dark room/area all the time?

EDIT: I actually didn't even think about shedding for some reason...:dunce: LOL...that's more than likely what it is...

I have gone over the temp in the viv a couple of times now just to check that i hade not got it wrong but the temp seems to be fine at the hot and cold end.she could be sheding cos i have only had her for a month or so so to date i have not seen her shed yet.
i am not breeding her because she is to young at the moment but in time i hope to add her to my exsisting pair.
i do not use any type of lighting in the viv they just get sun light during the day could this be the problem?

Well, now that my brain is back where it's supposed to be... :) I think your gecko is most likely shedding...considering you've had the gecko for a month and have not witnessed shedding.

You don't have to use lighting in the viv, it is actually unnecessary, I didn't mean to confuse you. I was just asking because I know of a few people who had been keeping cages in the garage, or closets that are pitch dark and they find their leos are duller.

It could be a couple things as to why your gecko's color is getting darker. First off it could be the color of the substrate you're using, if it's dark colored substrate the gecko (especially SHTCT) will get darker. Marcia (Goldengategeckos.com), did a study on her SHTCT on dark paper towels and found out that the color of the dark paper towels made her geckos color get darker, while the geckos on the lighter/white paper towel retained their color. I'm trying to do a search for the link on these forums for the study, but I can't see to find it.

Another thing, you might also want to try an Under Tank Heater instead of an above lighting system. UTH's provide the much needed belly heat for the geckos and keep them nice and warm and retain their bright color.
UTH's run about 20 bucks for a 10 - 20 gallon size and can be found at your local big chain pet store (I won't mention any names, but you know what stores I'm talking about).

well thats some food for thought i never new that the substrate could have a affect on the colour of my gecko....she is kept on light gray ish calcium sand and has both, an overhead cerramic heat bolb and a heat mat under the sand.
