Hey lonestar. I guess that question could have different answers. When I first started out with Leos, a lot of times I wouldn't even get it right until they were several months old. Now my wife and i have had so much practice sexing them over the last year and a hallf, we could usually get it pretty spot on by the time they're 2-3 months old, maybe if we're lucky, less than that sometimes. It's a lot harder to tell when they're still 1-2 months old, but when you know what to look for, it's not too bad. We're not perfect though as we make some bad calls, but most of the time, it's pretty spot on.

I couldn't tell at that age though just through a picture with grains and distortions, but with the clear see through containers we have and a white LED flashlight, we can see much better in person.

But is there something to do with length??? Like maybe they're 5 - 6inch or so to tell whether they're male or female?

A hatchlings gender development has more to do with age than length. Every gecko grows at its own rate and their length can vary, even as adults.

Exactly. Breeders can usually tell a geckos gender under 15 grams. But to be safe I always wait until they are 25 grams until I am sure of their sex. Some are easier to tell than others.

You must have a scale its one of the necessary tools of the trade. Next buy a jewelry loupe so you can accurately see pores. With a loupe I've sexed geckos as small as 5 grams.
