No stores around here sell vermiculite.....but they all sell perlite. My problem is that I dont have a digital scale to measure the 1 to 0.8 ratio. Is there any other way I can mix it? I heard with vermiculite to just compact it into a snowball and get a drip of water out of it and that means it is good (vmsherp). Can I do that trick with perlite?
Thank you.

Two suggestions:

--get a digital scale from Staples; it's not too expensive

--get the SIM or GEO egg container. Both of them suspend the eggs above the perlite and then you can just put a whole lot of water in the perlite and it won't matter.

I agree.

If you don't go the GEO route, I usually use 1:1 water to perlite ratio. It hasn't failed me yet.

Good luck

Ok, excuse me if I sound stupid here, but if I have a 4 ounce cup full of water, can I add that to 5 ounces of perlite? Basically what I am asking is if a full four ounce cup of water actually weighs four ounces.

So there is no plant store or home depot around you? Even if it is 40 minutes away, you can buy 4 cubic feet for 20-35 bucks and you will be set for years. And if you are considering breeding and you don't have a scale, please go get one immediately. Walmart has them very cheap. What I do is put the deli on the scale and then turn the scale on(this automatically zeroes out the deli) I then add vermiculite until it says 25 grams. I then spray the vermiculite until it says 49-50 grams. I then take it off the scale, put the egg(s) in, and weigh the overall grams and write it down. This way I can make sure the humidity is staying in throughout the incubation process.
