I attempted breeding the crickets! :main_cool3:

I put a box of moist coco-fibre in with the female crickets 2-3 weeks ago; today, I see 5-6 baby crickets walking around, yay!! They look like ants!

However, I have a problem. The coco-fibre is starting to mold (white flurry mold), the majority of the eggs still have not hatched. Can someone please give me advice? Shall I open the lid and let the medium dry off? Or is the presence of a little mold acceptable?

Mold to me is never ok. lol On the other hand i would let some of it dry out a bit.

Question: How are you sexing your crickets? ive never been able to tell. I guess i need some schooling on it.

the females are the ones with what looks like a stick up their butt(well they have the larger one). it actually is what they use to lay their eggs in the medium. try using slightly damp sand as the lay medium for the females. good luck.

Yea, the females are huge with a needle on the end. Do cricket eggs need moist bedding to survive? Will the eggs die if I let the whole thing dry up?

How can I avoid mold? If the crickets poop in there, eventually it will mold, right?

With regards to the mold... you are keeping the medium too moist. It should be moist, but not wet. You also want to make sure you have good ventilation.

The eggs will be okay unless completely dessicated.

With regards to the babies dying... you should rear them in a separate container. The greatest killer of baby crickets is condensation... they will drown at the slightest opportunity.

Ok I see. I must have added too much water, since it stayed "moist" for well over 2 weeks already. I saw more baby crickets this morning, I hope they can live on.

Bronko, I use plain plastic tub (bought from IKEA), the sides are very smooth, the crickets nor the dubia roaches can't climb out of it.

If you have a tub that they can get out of then simply put clear tape around the bottom about a 1/4 way up. I did it and it works great

Retaining Crickets 101:
Three ways to retain crickets in the breeding area.
......Wide Clear Tape put around the inside area. (sometimes comes loose)
...........Vasoline used in the same manner is what I use. They won't cross it.
.................Cricket collars with an invisible fence installed around the area you don't wish for them to cross. They will get a mild shock to deter that action..............May the gecko force be with you...........
Take care. HJ

Sexing crickets is very easy. The females have a black tube sticking out of their abdomen. Males do not. Hope this helps!
