what is better for juvi leos?
one store said they only use meal worms the other said to only use crickets.

By the way we have picked up 2 leos. Had to buy them at a big pet store. They are not very big and look very different in color.

Thanks to everyone here for all the help!

Happy holidays!!

Mealworms are alot better... Crickets are harder to take care of and don't live as long.. With mealworms its easier to feed them to, you just put the mealies in the bowl and they don't escape. Crickets are like junk food to geckos. Mealworms are alot more nutritious.

I use mealworms with an occasional batch of dusted crickets. Well I have been for the last 3 weeks with the crickets because I want too make sure my girls are getting enough vitimins and calcium since they laid eggs.

mealworms

I say mealwoms. I only feed mealworms and I find them easier to keep. There has also been talk that leos fed mealies grow quicker and bigger.

What do you all think abotu the problem that the Leos get fat when only feed mealies? In Germany we normaly use Crickets cause the fat-problem.

Some are talking about Geckos that already died or can die caused by adipohepatic.

What do you think of it?

Feeding with mealworms is easier and they grow fast but crickets are better for the Leos, because they are healthier.
Them every day to feed with mealworm, is as if you eat every day at Mc Donalds or Burger King. ;)
They get fat and thereby do not live so long.
The healthiest is if you feed cricket and give them only a few times mealworms.

I also have a bearded dragon so I feed usually feed a variety. They get mealies, crickets, silkies, phoenix worms and horn worms. I alternate each evening what I feed. I have a "roach phobia" so I haven't used alot of roaches.

I hear talk of adipohepatic but too avoid it I just buy the normal size mealworms except for my pair that is about 4 years old. They eat the bigger mealworms. The adipohepatic is like a whole new debate lmao. The silkworms are cool but my leopards don't eat them much. Phoniex worms are awesome. The places I usually buy them from were out and finally have more in after a couple weeks.

Well yeha Silkworms seem to be realy good but I mean the normal Mealworms as you (I think) use.
I mean most Geckos I got from US(nothing against US Geckos you are the basement of the whole thing!!!!!) are just fat. I often hear in german forum that these geckos are too fat and that they could die on it. I pesonally heard it only one but I´m not sure If I would trust that guy(we had differences) but it´s a realy good question. I oftten hearthat ppl have mealies 24/7 available and I´ve bought a Gecko from a US breeder for december fair which was normal an the picture but when I got her she was realy fater than on the pic(not bigger or better grown just fat^^) I personally feed normaly crickets than and they are loosing weight and start to not look that fat but thats not realy the point.
I´m asking myself if you have every noticed some of your geckos died caused by the t ofat feeding?

bye
Thorsten

:main_laugh: That made me laugh lol. I got a female tang and an albino bell that were raised on crickets. After 10 days, they were eating mealies. Now just as I finish filling the food dish up, the male albino almost runs too the food dish to eat them up.:main_thumbsup:

That is a good point Thorsten. My feelings are use what works best too you. I have seen the size difference of leopards raised and crickets and leopards raised on mealies. My leopards get manly mealies but they get crickets and phoenix worms also. I kinda like the healthier looking geckos over the skinnier ones.

only mealworms is to much fat , i had a leo from a breeder that only feed mealworms , and i tryed to feed him crickets but he dont hunt them , so i gave him still mealworms and tryed crickets from time to time but he was always lazy and he never had the power what my other geckos have. one day he was dead, for no reason so i gve him to a official veterinarian she did a examination and the result was the gecko died on fatty degeneration of heart and fetty liver (adipoheatic).she told me that is the result of only feed him mealworms when he was growing. the veterinarian is a specialist for reptils she is working for the state where i live and i absolutly trust here, here in europ only some breeders that do mass producing feed mealworms to let they grow faster! so they can sell more. so thats what i know about feeding only mealworms all my ather geckos doing good!and i only feed crickets and locust´s !

I am guilty of having some fat geckos but they get fed meal worms-crickets-2 types of roaches and super worms

So there is a big variety in their diet

I have some geckos that eat only mealworms and some that eat only crickets (out of a total of 26 at the moment). I don't see any difference in fatness between the two groups.

As far as if giving the gecko health, to me it dosnt matter. so long as whatever is fed to it, its dusted, etc. But personly, I use crickets. my gecko loves them :D
