ok so i hate crickets..i have 3 leos and love then..2 juvi and one baby i think cause dang its tyiny like 2 1/2 in long or maybe 3..so anyway i have been doin mealies and crickets but found that i do not want to deal with crix at all. Do i have to or can i just do melies and maybe another worm like an occassional wax worm? I am also thinking of getting pheonix worms too just to give a variety. I know wax worms are like a drug for our geckos but was wondering if i place one wax and several mealies in the dish each day would that be ok? just for the variety? I do not want them to become addicted but didn't think one a day with other worms would be a prob. Let me know what u think :D oh btw I am new to the forums and pretty new to geckos as well. I want to give them a great home as I love them to pieces.

Also another question. I have one of my geckos (Willow), my first gecko, in a 20 gal high rise tank but am having a little bit of a heating prob. I think i got the wrong size UTH. I think its too small or something . I have a thermometer on bottom of tank on the paper towel to keep track of temp but seems to go no higher then 75 on the UTH! I don't think this is warm enough on the warm side so have a night lamp on as well and still temp only gets to about 80 if i am lucky...do I need a larger UTH for the high rise and maybe a higher wattage bulb for the light? It eats good and is active in evening and early morn so am not super concerned but also do not want it in winter mode all the time. Thanks for all answers to my conccerns. :) Glad I am here and will be a regualar!

Firstly, welcome to GF :)

Nope, you don't HAVE to use crix. I use them VERY rarely if at all. I mainly feed mealworms with the occasional waxie and my geckos are very healthy.

One thing I will warn, though is sometimes mealworms, if they're kept in the same dish as a waxworm, will all swarm around it and start to eat it. It's really gross, actually.

If that's not something you want to deal with, you can always offer the waxie first, and then put the mealie dish in, or the other way around.

As for the tank, if it's not heating properly, you'll need a higher wattage mat. Tall tanks are difficult to heat, and not very practical for a gecko that doesn't do a whole lot of climbing. The next chance you get, you might be better off buying a 20gal long tank. That should heat nicely with the heat sources you have.

thanks!

wow that was a super quick reply lol thanks so much for that..

ok about the wax..actually i did offer it first. dropped it right in front of it and the gecko gobbled it up..second it hasn't eaten any mealies at all tho haven't even had it a week. Kinda named it Cream..better then it lol..not super worried about Cream not eating the mealies yet. I place 6-8 mini and small mealies in her dish fresh every day even if she doesn't eat them as i gut load them and want the fresh vitamins for it..Cream is very small and tail very skinny..i think prolly cause of its age so was thinking a wax worm a day plus any mealies she might eat would help with wait gain and growth.? Not gonna get addicted right lol?

About the tank of my other..Willow.. I think i will look for a 20L and was wondering about the UTH this tank has..can i remove it and placeit on the new tank when i get it or will it be ruined if I try to remove it. Hate to have to invest in another but will if need be for Willow. thanks again for such a quick response! :D

Thanks for the welcome as well

If you haven't had it for very long, don't worry about Cream not eating. He/she will start to eat more when he/she's comfortable. You may also want to check the temps in that cage just as a precaution. Leos don't like to eat when it's too cold.

A waxie a day is fine, it will help with the weight gain.

And yes, you can remove Willow's heater to place it on another tank. The heater itself won't be damaged, but sometimes the adhesive stops working. All you have to do if that happens is tape over it with some duct tape. And vuella! good as new lol
