Cross-breed question.

OK, so I'd like to start by saying that I have no intention at all of doing this, but rather I'm just really curious.

Anyway, I have 2 female gargoyle geckos, and am thinking about trying to get a male to try and breed some of these guys. I work at a pet shop, and mentioned this to one of my coworkers. While we don't have any gargoyles there right now, we do have a couple cresteds, one male and one female, and he jokingly suggested that I get the male crested to breed with them.

Now, I remember reading somewhere that the general rule for animal hybrids, is that animals of the same genus may be able to breed, such as donkeys and horses, or lions and tigers, but the offspring are often sterile.

So, long story short, since cresteds and gargoyles are both Rhacodactylus, and are very similar, could they possibly breed together, or with any other Rhacodactylus for that matter, and would the offspring be in any way desirable?

Again, this is completely out of curiosity, as personally I feel it would be very irresponsible for someone with the level of experience I have in this area to experiment with this, but I do still find the idea very interesting.

If I recall....

I THINK this has been done before. Or was it a Chewy and a Gargoyle...hmm...gotta check.

Aha! I found a thread about the exact question you have asked. Here ya go. Just as I thought...it hasn't been done, BUT it's been done with chahoua/gargoyle...

And here are pictures of a chahoua x gargoyle

DISCLAIMER: I just want to say that I do not support this practice at all.

wow those people from that site are odd lol i read some of their posts asking if they can cross a gecko with a skink lol i do think that some cross breeding is ok and if people want to try and make the next new animal thats fine but do your research first

For the most part I would be against it to. The only way that I would really be for something like this is if the breeder really knew what they were doing, and already had an idea of what they wanted to get out of the hybrid, and not just a "Hey, it would be cool to try to throw these two together" thing.

this is why i said to do research first i think that even with years of breeding i dnt think it should be attempted but i dnt dissagree with people with knowledge that are looking to highlight a feature or traite there is a ton of hybrds already done and are still being done like ive heard of a boa and anaconda havent seen any pics but there is some rumors of it and ones that ive seen is the jungle corn witch is a corn snake and a cali king some one has to have an idea in the begining for some one to even try it

Chewies and cresties work, a garg....well whatever you try to place it with, it is going to try and make a meal of it. Gargs are very aggressive, they even nip and attack other gargs, its one of those species that really should be housed 1 at a time, or 2 females is a VERY large cage. And quite often times then not, breeding results in the geckos having tailes bitten off. Thankfully gargs grow them back. But a garg would easily try to devour a crested gecko.
