Well I finally got a diagnosis on my "Maya". I had posted a picture of her a few weeks back so this has been on going. The crypto test FINALLY came back from the vets as positive. I know this isn't good.

My question is how many of you have had crypto positive geckos, treated them and had them live any length of time. My vet said it is not curable but worth trying to save her.

Thanks for the responses.

I am so very sorry to hear about the Crypto diagnosis, Sonja. So far, it is always fatal in Leopard Geckos, although there are some new treatments that can prolong their lives for up to a year from what I understand. This parasite is similar to aids in the way it affects geckos. Even though it is always fatal, they can live quality lives for a limited amount of time.

If you have other reptiles, you will have to consider the risk of infecting them by having Maya around them. You will need to practice extremely fastidious disinfection protocol, with strict quarantine practice. You should wear vinyl gloves when handling her or any item she comes in contact with, and disinfect her enclosure, hides, and water bowl every 24-48 hours to prevent her from continually re-infecting herself.

Treatment is expensive and time-consuming, but if you make the commitment to care for her until the time comes that you will have to make a difficult decision regarding her life, it could be a very rewarding experience.

Please know that all of us here at GeckoForums are here to support you through this...

Personally, I do not feel it is worth it to treat an animal with crypto if the best efforts can only prolong the life of the leo for a year... I feel it would be a selfish thing to do... Sometimes it is best for the animal to just be put down instead of it drastically loosing weight until it finally dies...

I feel any reptile that test + for crypto should be euthinized right then and there... It really does not make sence to keep an animal alive only to suffer and to potentially spread this around to the rest of your collection...

Sonja, I am very sorry... but I have to agree that humanely euthanizing Maya is probably your wisest decision. She will only suffer and waste away from this tragic and devastating disease. My heart goes out to you, and only you can make the difficult and final decision.

I would have to agree with Gregg and Marcia. Euthanization is probably the best thing for the animal once diagnosed with an incurable disease that always results in death. Watching a gecko slowly deteriorate over time and die is not fair to the animal and not fun for the keeper.
