Cryptosporidium

There has been a lot of talk about parasites here ... Just wondered how many folks have heard or dealt with Cryptosporidium ... From what I have read it can be transmitted to humans and the stuff can kill you ... I did lots of research before getting my kids some Geckos and I knew there were serveral pathogens that could be transmitted to them (I demand good hand washing at all times) ... But I never though about my kids getting a life threating illment from a little pet :(

Am I just going a little over board on this? (Sorry very pertective Dad of two little ones 6 and 11) :main_rolleyes:

They type of Crypto that affects humans is different than the strain that affects reptiles. I recently wrote an article on Crypto that was supposed to get published on the Wiki in August... has anyone seen it yet?

I have not had any experience with Crypto, not do I know anyone close to me that has (knock on wood!). I also was worried about the transfer of it between my geckos and myself, especially after a weak moment and a local pet chain, and I came home with a teeny tiny gecko. From what I read (I did A LOT of reading up about it) the only real way to combat it is to, like you said, be sure to wash and disinfect after every handling session. As long as your kids aren't handling the gecko, then eating their PB&J sandwiches without cleansing, I don't think you'll have a problem :)

You would know if your gecko was ill, and carrying the Cryptosporidium parasite. They would begin to waste away, and from what I've read, regurgitate their food. The key to keeping your animals (and therefore your children) healthy is cleanliness. Keep the tanks clean, do not let uneaten crickets or mealies crawl and hop around on the gecko's waste, etc.

Is Cryptosporidium very common in Geckos? Can other reptiles get it ... or is it more common in Geckos? (Seems like every thing I read said mammals and reptiles like Geckos?) ... Odd

So here is a question ... What can we clean with to kill/prevent all these bugs from getting our little guys :)

Bleach solution?

Bleach and Alcohol solution?

Nolvasan solution?

Nolvasan and Alcohol solution?

Ammonia solution?

Vinegar solution?

Hot steam?

I also understand clean feeders and quarantine of new animals is also part of the process ... Just concerned with the disinfectant at this point.

Marcia great article!!!

Seems like steam is really one of the best ways to kill a lot of this stuff.

What do you use in your shop?
