I have the SAME question. Do dead embryos still look red? I have been meaning to ask that question so many times!! I have to assume that when the egg is rotting, it is dead even if there is red inside. I had one that was literally oozing some kind of liquid (barely) from a darkened dent. There was some mold on top. The bottom had collapsed upward as well. When candled, there was still pink inside. I was afraid to assume anything but man, it was funky!!
Any thoughts or answers?
Thanks,
Jen

It's possible the egg was in the process of hatching, not rotting

I don't think it was in the process of hatching. It was super stinky and had been looking that way for weeks. I just kept holding out for a happy ending but it was just bad, bad looking. BUT, it candled pink even with the funk and complete deflation. When they candle pink, does that always indicate life? If not, I wonder what is taking place with the dead embryo that the vessels still seem 'alive'.
I wonder if anyone knows for sure and can help us out. If I find out that pink always means there is life, I will feel HORRIBLE.
