When you put the deli cups in the incubator, should there be holes in the cups? Also, i've seen people put substrate in the cups & simply place the cup in the incubator. I've also heard of filling the incubator with substrate & not using cups at all???

THere should not be holes in the cup. You want to keep in the moisture. Every once in awhile, open the top of the deli cup VERY briefly to let in some fresh oxygen, shut it, and close the incubator. The best thing to do is have cups for seperate clutches. Because once the clutch hatches, you can toss out the old substrate. If you have the entire incubator full of substrate and one egg hatches, it can contaminate other eggs with the old fluid from the hatched egg. You want to be as sanitary as possible.

I actually have *one* hole in all of my deli cups in the incubator. In a hovabator, you can use 16 oz. deli cups.

I put hatch rite in the deli cup and have two holes in it for air circulation,
if you have no holes in the deli cup, the eggs will not get any fresh air or circulation and the egg will die.

people incubate with and without holes and as long as you keep the moisture level right and some air exchange ever week or 2, you'll be fine. I open my sealed containers every week or 2 and they all hatch.
