not even a hybrid......

A hybrid is the product of 2 different species.

In this case you are talking about an intergrade - the crossing of 2 subspecies. In extreme southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona the 2 subspecies cross producing offspring that look like pures of each and also some offspring that exhibit characteristics of each parent (how do I know......I live a whole 2 hours away from being able to road cruise the area and have seen examples of said offspring since 2002 when I first road cruised that area). Go farther west into Arizona and you'll begin getting influence of california kingsnakes into the mix, so 3 subspecies' genetics being expressed.

Anyhow the cross mentioned by the original poster would be Lampropeltis getula splendida X Lampropeltis getula nigritus. And in all honesty I wouldn't pay more or less for the cross than what pure splendida and pure nigritus sell for given the intergrade cross naturally occurs in the wild. AND there isn't going to be much of a difference in the offspring, some may look more mexican black than desert king, others will look more desert king than mexican black, and others will look inbetween. The inbetween animals will most likely, assuming here, look like a very faded desert king/low grade mexican black king (thus why they might be cheaper than a mexican black kingsnake). Why? Well, when mexican black kingsnakes hatch they look exactly like a desert kingsnake and with time the yellow speckled pattern fades.
