i get different readings based on whether or not i tape/put something on top of the probe to hold it down, or just lay it on top of the paper towels. which one would you think is the more accurate reading? it is a difference in about 5 degrees F, with it being hotter when taped/held down, and 5 degrees cooler when just resting on top. how do you have your probe in your tank? Thanks all

Go with in between. The tape on the prob acts as an insulator and the one just sitting on top doesnt hold the weight that a gecko on the paper towel would. I would just go with something in the middle. Also you can try taping the prob but not on the actual prob portion so that it is held firmly down but not interfering with the prob itself.
